The Los Angeles Angels have signed veteran reliever Hunter Strickland to a minor-league deal, the team announced. Strickland, 35, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022 but will be invited to Spring Training with the Halos. He owns respectable numbers throughout his career, including a 3.93 xFIP, 8.43 K/9, 3.44 BB/9, and 0.94 HR/9. Even if he makes the Opening Day roster, Strickland isn't on the fantasy radar.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBaller

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Hunter Strickland blew his second save of the season of Thursday versus the Colorado Rockies. With Luis Garcia and Carlos Estevez being dealt earlier in the week, manager Ron Washington turned to Strickland in the ninth inning of Thursday's contest. The veteran struggled by opening the inning with a walk to Ryan McMahon, before recording two outs and allowing a two-run homer to Jake Cave to tie the game. Strickland on the season has a 3.35 ERA, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Ben Joyce and his 103+ MPH heater get an opportunity the next time there is a save situation. Joyce is intriguing, but the Angels victories are few and far between, making the closer situation messy. Unless managers are desperate, this is a situation to avoid for now.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller

The Cincinnati Reds released relief pitcher Hunter Strickland on Tuesday. Strickland had yet to appear in the big leagues for the Reds this season and was pitching on the farm at Triple-A Louisville, where he had allowed 14 runs on 13 hits (two home runs) while walking 12 and striking out eight in 11 relief innings. The 34-year-old right-hander has 28 career saves in nine major-league seasons, but he'll be looking for work elsewhere now that he's on the open market. In his 66 relief appearances for the Reds in 2022, Strickland had a 4.91 ERA (4.78 FIP), 1.51 WHIP and 21.1 percent strikeout rate in 62 1/3 innings pitched.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Cincinnati Reds re-signed relief pitcher Hunter Strickland to a minor-league deal on Saturday. Strickland had seven saves for the Reds last year to go along with a 4.91 ERA (4.78 FIP), 1.51 WHIP, 33 walks and 60 strikeouts in 62 1/3 relief innings. He lost his handle on the closing gig in August due to poor performance, but he'll be back in Cincinnati's bullpen again in 2023. Alexis Diaz figures to open this season as the Reds' primary closer, but Strickland could work his way into a setup role if he pitches well this spring. The signing makes sense with both Tony Santillan and Tejay Antone projected to open the year on the injured list for the Reds.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Cincinnati Reds closer Hunter Strickland will be removed from the closer's role after he blew his fourth save of the season in Sunday's win over the Milwaukee Brewers, according to manager David Bell. The skipper said he'll look for different opportunities for Strickland outside of the ninth inning to help him regain his form. Strickland had allowed eight hits and seven runs in his last four innings of work before striking out two in a perfect inning on Wednesday in a 10-2 loss. Bell didn't say exactly who might close out games moving forward, but Alexis Diaz is the best bet for the Reds and fantasy managers in need of saves at this juncture. Diaz has four saves on the year and a great 1.94 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 53 K's in 41 2/3 innings, but searching for saves in Cincinnati won't be a lucrative business in fantasy.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
