The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 25-22 in Super Bowl LVIII.
There were several accomplishments in the game. Patrick Mahomes joined Tom Brady as the only quarterback in NFL history with three Super Bowl championships before the age of 30. Meanwhile, Kyle Shanahan has lost three Super Bowls despite having a double-digit lead in every game.
However, the kickers are the ones who stole the show in Las Vegas. We saw a record broken twice on Sunday.

Who Had The Longest Field Goal In Super Bowl History?
Before Sunday’s matchup between the 49ers and the Chiefs, the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history stood for 30 years. Buffalo Bills kicker Steve Christie had the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, nailing a 54-yarder in the 30-13 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in 1994.

Did Jake Moody Break The Super Bowl Field Goal Record?
After a scoreless first quarter, the 49ers were the first team to put points on the board early in the second quarter. Moody hit a 55-yard field goal 12 seconds into the second quarter, beating Christie’s 30-year-old record by one yard. The rookie kicker only attempted three field goals of 50 or more yards during the regular season.

Yet, he converted two of those kicks, including a career-long 57-yarder in the Week 2 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Moody was inconsistent during the playoffs, making 75% of his field goal attempts in three games. However, the former Michigan player did convert all three attempts from 50 or more yards away.
Did Harrison Butker Break The Super Bowl Field Goal Record?
Usually, a record lasts more than a few hours before getting broken. Unfortunately for Moody, that didn’t happen this time. Butker nailed a 57-yard field goal attempt with five minutes left in the third quarter, cutting the San Francisco lead to four points. The former Georgia Tech player now has the longest field goal made in Super Bowl history.

No one should be surprised that Butker converted from 57 yards away. The veteran kicker made all five field goal attempts from 50 or more yards away during the regular season.
