1 year agoNew York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov (lower body) is on target to return to action Thursday on the road versus the Montreal Canadiens. The veteran hasn't appeared since suffering his injury in the first period of a Jan. 2 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche, one of his former teams. It's been a rock-solid season for Varlamov, who owns a 2.78 goals-against average and a stellar .918 save percentage across 14 outings (13 starts), going 6-4-2 in the process. Additionally, his 6.12 goals saved above average ranks 13th of 67 qualified netminders, as per Hockey Reference. Ilya Sorokin has started all 10 games for the Isles during Varlamov's absence, while Ken Appleby was returned to the AHL when Varlamov was activated off Injured Reserve on Monday.--Brenton Kemp

4 months agoNew York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov (lower body) has been labeled as day-to-day ahead of Thursday's contest against Seattle. The veteran netminder continues to nurse a lower-body injury. He was able to back up Ilya Sorokin on Tuesday versus Montreal but might have to exit the lineup on Thursday. The team has recalled Marcus Hogberg from the minors on an emergency basis. Sorokin is penciled in for his 17th start of the campaign Thursday. He's looking to improve a 6-6-4 record in a good matchup against a team that tends to struggle on the road and has gone 3-5-0 in its last eight games with 3.13 goals allowed.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

6 months agoNew York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov is expected to make a second consecutive start in Saturday's clash with the Dallas Stars. Regular starter Ilya Sorokin was limited in training camp while recovering from back surgery, giving Varlamov a chance to open the campaign as the Islanders' No.1. He had a hard time against Utah on Thursday, finishing a 5-4 overtime loss with 21 saves. However, the Islanders are going with Varlamov again on Saturday in a tough matchup. The Russian veteran has a strong 17-9-2 career record against Dallas. But he faces a team that went 26-11-4 on home ice last season and is considered a heavy favorite by the bookmakers for Saturday's game.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

12 months agoNew York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov posted his third shutout of the season with 41 saves in Saturday's 2-0 win over Nashville. The Russian veteran saw a lot of the puck but had a perfect game to improve to 11-6-4. Playing as Ilya Sorokin's backup, Varlamov has registered five wins across his last seven starts. His goals-against average for the season stands at 2.72, and Varlamov has posted a .916 save percentage. Sorokin has won each of his last two starts, so the Islanders goalies have heated up just at the right time. The team has climbed to third in the Metropolitan Division, with five games left to play.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

1 year agoNew York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov has resumed skating as he works his way back from a lower-body injury, according to head coach Lane Lambert. The veteran left a Jan. 2 game against the Colorado Avalanche after just 14:52 due to the injury and has not appeared since. The ailment interrupted what has been a nice season for the 35-year-old who sports a 2.78 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage across 14 appearances (13 starts), going 6-4-2 in that time. His 6.03 goals saved above average ranks 17th of 68 qualified goaltenders, as per Hockey Reference. Not only has Ilya Sorokin started all seven games so far in Varlamov's absence, the Russian netminder has made 12 consecutive starts while backup Ken Appleby has yet to see any game action.--Brenton Kemp
