Who Plays on Thursday Night Football in Week 17?
The New York Jets travel to Cleveland to play the Cleveland Browns. The game is being shown on Prime Video, and it starts at 8:15 PM ET.
The Jets come in at 6-9 on the season and have experienced a carousel at quarterback since Aaron Rodgers' (Achilles) injury in Week 1. New York's defense still ranks third in DVOA, but their 32nd-ranked offense has limited what they can accomplish this season.
Cleveland sits at 10-5, having won six of their last eight games with a record of 7-1 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. They boast the number one defense in DVOA, and the resurgence of Joe Flacco has them clicking at the right time.
Who Will Win on Thursday Night Football in Week 17?
The Cleveland Browns are favored by seven points and are expected to secure a win in their final home game of the season. However, with potentially inclement weather and two elite defenses in play, the game is likely to remain relatively close.
With Zach Wilson (concussion) sidelined for this game, the Jets will once again start Trevor Siemian at quarterback. In Week 16, Siemian completed 27-of-49 passes for 217 yards, a touchdown, and an interception against a weak Commanders' defense. This marks the fourth quarterback the Jets have used this year, and none have found success.
The Browns are currently on a roll, having recently secured a dominant 36-22 win over the Houston Texans in Week 16. Joe Flacco has thrown for at least 300 yards in three straight games, having to rely on his arm due to the Browns' depleted offensive line and run game. Cleveland's defense has been formidable, especially at home this year. While the Jets' defense is expected to have some success, the offensive concerns make the Browns one-touchdown favorites.
What Are the Playoff Implications of Thursday Night Football in Week 17?
The Jets have been officially eliminated from playoff contention, rendering this game with no playoff implications for them. Even if they manage to win their remaining games and finish with an 8-9 record, they lack the necessary tiebreakers to secure a Wild Card spot.
Conversely, the Browns only need a victory to clinch a playoff berth and secure the number five seed in the AFC. A win would also maintain their slim hopes of claiming the AFC North title and the number one seed, contingent on the outcome of the Ravens versus Dolphins game on Sunday.
