Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison has not had the breakout season many fantasy managers had hoped for after the team moved on from Dalvin Cook, but he's been productive at times during the 2023 campaign. Although Ty Chandler has begun to eat into his workload, he's remained on the fantasy radar.
Mattison was absent for last week's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he could play in Sunday's game in an important NFC North matchup.
Will Mattison play against the Lions in Week 16? Let's take a look at his latest injury update and potential fantasy outlook for the second round of the fantasy football playoffs.

Alexander Mattison Injury Update for Fantasy Football
Mattison (ankle) was not seen at the portion of Wednesday's walkthrough practice that was open to the media. Head coach Kevin O'Connell didn't rule out Mattison for Sunday's Week 16 contest against the Detroit Lions, but he also spoke more strongly on Wednesday than he did on Monday about the likelihood of Ty Chandler serving as the team's primary RB for the second straight game.
Mattison sprained his right ankle in Week 14 and sat out last Saturday's overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals while Chandler exploded for 23 carries, 132 rushing yards, and a touchdown while adding three catches for 25 yards. If Mattison can't practice the rest of the week and doesn't play on Sunday, Chandler will be in play yet again as an RB2 in fantasy, but this time in a much tougher matchup against the division-rival Lions.
Alexander Mattison Fantasy Football Outlook
If Mattison suits up in Week 16, he's a riskier play than he's been all season. Not only could he be limited by the ankle injury and split time with Chandler, but the Lions have allowed the second-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs this year.
In a crucial must-win spot for fantasy managers, he's likely not worth rolling the dice on. Although he had plenty of fantasy value early in the season due to raw usage, he has underwhelmed and lost control of the bell-cow role. Unless you're in a deep league and have no other options, sit Mattison on Sunday.
