Gerrit Cole Unanimously Wins First Cy Young Award
1 year agoNew York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole unanimously won the 2023 American League Cy Young to win the award for the first time in his career after finishing as a runner-up twice. The former first overall pick became the 25th pitcher to win the Cy Young unanimously and the 11th in the AL. He finished ahead of Sonny Gray and Kevin Gausman. Cole has been one of the most durable and dependable starters in baseball since 2018. The 33-year-old was the clear favorite in 2023 while leading the AL in ERA (2.63), ERA+ (165), innings pitched (209) and opponents' batting average (.206) while leading the majors in WHIP (0.98). Cole gave up just four earned runs in his final five starts. He became the sixth Yankees pitcher to win the award and first since Roger Clemens in 2001.
