Guardians Designate Cal Quantrill For Assignment
1 year agoThe Cleveland Guardians designated right-hander Cal Quantrill for assignment on Tuesday. He was projected to earn $6.6 million next season and had two years of team control remaining, but Cleveland has decided to move on after his 2023 season was marred by injuries and ineffectiveness. Quantrill finished the month of the regular season strong, but overall he disappointed in his third full season with the team by going 4-7 with a career-worst 5.24 ERA (4.79 FIP) and a 1.46 WHIP while walking 35 and striking out 58 in 99 2/3 innings over 19 starts. He's still on the right side of 30, though, and should generate plenty of interest on the open market this offseason after posting a 3.16 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 72 appearances (54 starts) for the Guardians from 2021-22.
