Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs was the 79th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Downs had an excellent college career, totaling 202 receptions for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns in three years at North Carolina.
The former Tar Heel had a limited role as a freshman, totaling seven receptions on 10 targets for 119 receiving yards and three touchdowns. However, he became a star in 2021. Downs had 101 receptions for 1,335 passing yards and eight touchdowns that season, leading the team in every category.
Despite losing Sam Howell to the NFL, the former North Carolina star had a similar year in 2022. Down again led the team in receptions (94), receiving yards (1,029), and touchdowns (11). More importantly, he has been productive as a rookie.

Josh Downs Injury Update For Fantasy Football
The former Tar Heels star has been a critical part of the Colts’ passing attack this year. Unfortunately, Downs has been dealing with a knee injury lately. The rookie wide receiver was questionable to play in Week 9 against the Carolina Panthers. While he did play, Downs left the game early with the knee injury.
Unfortunately, the talented rookie re-injured his knee in the win. Indianapolis takes on the New England Patriots in Germany this weekend. Fantasy players should prepare to be without Downs in Week 10.
Josh Downs Fantasy Football Outlook
The Colts haven’t declared the rookie out for Sunday’s international matchup against the Patriots. However, the team will likely be cautious with their star wide receiver and give him a week to rest. Furthermore, Indianapolis has their bye in Week 11. By keeping Downs off the field this week, the Colts give the rookie two weeks to heal before the final stretch of the regular season.
Downs has been outstanding this year. The former Tar Heels star had 40 receptions and 483 receiving yards over the first eight games, setting a franchise record in both categories.
If the rookie can’t play this week, Michael Pittman Jr. will see an increase in snaps and targets. The former USC star is the WR12, averaging 12 half-point PPR fantasy points per game this season.
Fantasy players in deeper leagues can consider adding Alec Pierce off the waiver wire. However, the matchup isn’t fantasy-friendly this week. Therefore, the second-year receiver is a desperate flex option for fantasy players in deeper leagues.
