Ty Gibbs Will Start P11 Ahead Of An Emotional Anniversary For The JGR Family
1 year agoOn Saturday afternoon, Ty Gibbs qualified 11th for Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway. While the end of a season can always be emotional, for Gibbs, this weekend takes on a different meaning as Monday marks the one-year anniversary of his father's passing. On November 6, 2022, just hours after his son won the Xfinity championship, JGR executive Coy Gibbs passed away in his sleep. Although this will be NASCAR's second visit to the track since Gibb's untimely passing, you have to think this particular trip will be more emotional for the second-generation racer, given the significance of the date. While events like the passing of Coy Gibbs can serve as a reminder of what really matters in life, we cannot ignore the role that emotion and tragedy can play in sports. From Brett Favre's spectacular performance on Monday Night Football the day after his father's death to Dale Jr.'s emotional victory in the first race at Daytona following his father's passing, tragedies have a way of elevating athletes. This is what I expect this weekend with Ty Gibbs. As a star on the rise, at a track he won his Xfinity championship at just one year ago, on the eve of an emotional anniversary, I expect the No. 54 to have a big day this Sunday at Phoenix.
