Joshua Dobbs Traded To The Vikings, Fantasy Football Outlook

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs was the 135th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dobbs had a productive college career, completing 61.5% of his pass attempts for 7,138 yards and 53 touchdowns in four years at Tennessee. He also had 438 rushing attempts for 2,160 yards and 32 touchdowns in college.

However, the former Volunteer only played six games in Pittsburgh, completing 10 of 17 pass attempts for 45 yards and an interception. Dobbs bounced around the NFL after leaving the Steelers in 2020. He spent the 2022 season with the Tennessee Titans, starting two games. The veteran quarterback completed 58.8% of his pass attempts for 411 yards and two touchdowns during his time in Tennessee.

Yet, his limited production earned him a spot with the Cleveland Browns as Deshaun Watson’s backup. However, things changed when the Browns traded Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals before Week 1. The veteran is the QB12 for the year, averaging 15.6 fantasy points per game.

Joshua Dobbs Trade To The Vikings Breakdown

Yesterday, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon benched Dobbs for the rookie Clayton Tune. Today, the former Tennessee star got traded to the Vikings for a late-round pick swap. Arizona sent Dobbs and a seventh-round pick to Minnesota for a sixth-round pick.

The Cardinals traded a fifth-round pick to the Browns for Dobbs and a seventh-round pick before opening weekend. In the end, Arizona swapped a fifth-round selection for a sixth-rounder to have Dobbs on the team for eight weeks.

Fantasy Football Impact From Joshua Dobbs Trade

Unfortunately, the Vikings lost Kirk Cousins to a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 8. While head coach Kevin O’Connell said the Jaren Hall would start Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Dobbs could be available to play.

That means the rookie will have a short leash. While the veteran will only have a few days to learn the playbook and practice before Sunday’s matchup, Dobbs was in a similar situation earlier this year after getting traded to Arizona.

Fantasy players should feel excited about the former Volunteer landing with the Vikings. Dobbs hasn’t been elite this year. Yet, he was able to make Marquise Brown fantasy relevant. Brown is the WR21, averaging 10.9 half-point PPR fantasy points per game.

Many were worried Minnesota would fall out of the playoff race and not active Justin Jefferson off the injured reserve list in a few weeks. Thankfully, Dobbs should keep the Vikings in the playoff mix. That means fantasy players should expect Jefferson to return this season.

Furthermore, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson remain weekly starters for fantasy teams once Dobbs takes over as the starting quarterback.
