Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers was viewed as a talented prospect coming out of Florida State in the 2020 NFL Draft. He had a few big weeks during his rookie campaign, setting himself up for a big sophomore season.
However, after he suffered a torn Achilles in training camp leading up the the 2021 season, he hasn't quite been the same player. He was traded from the Rams to the Vikings after Week 2 of the 2023 season but hasn't seen a big role in Kirk Cousins' offense. Now, he's a cut candidate for fantasy football heading into Week 7.
Should you drop Akers in fantasy football? Let's dive in.

Cam Akers Season Review
Akers began the season as the lead ball carrier for the Rams, rushing 22 times for just 29 yards. After that, he was a healthy inactive in Week 2 and was quickly traded to the Vikings.
Since Alexander Mattison struggled early in the year, fantasy managers were hoping Akers would start to eat into his workload. That has not happened.
Akers has rushed just 11 times for 68 yards and caught five passes for 21 yards in three games with Minnesota. Mattison has remained the clear RB1, meaning Akers has not been a fantasy-viable running back.
Can I Drop Cam Akers in Fantasy Football?
After six weeks of action, Akers doesn't look like he's going to be worth rostering moving forward. A Mattison injury could open things up for Akers, but even then, he would likely produce lackluster fantasy numbers as the team's lead back. The Vikings would likely add competition to the backfield in that case anyway.
Instead of rostering Akers, you're better off stashing high-upside handcuff running backs in good offenses. Players like Rico Dowdle, Jerick McKinnon, Trayveon Williams, Tank Bigsby, and Kenneth Gainwell would have plenty of fantasy value if the player in front of them had to miss time. Akers has little to no path to upside.
