Zach Davies Designated For Assignment
Zach Davies for assignment on Wednesday and recalled pitcher Justin Martinez from the minors in a corresponding move. Apparently the D-backs had seen enough with Davies after he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in just three innings in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox in his start on Tuesday. The 30-year-old just wasn't good at all in Arizona this year, going 2-5 with a 7.00 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings in his 18 starts, and Arizona will look to upgrade their starting rotation if they make the postseason. Ryne Nelson is the best bet to take Davies' spot in the rotation if the club secures a wild-card spot.

Nationals Sign Zach Davies To Minor-League Deal
Zach Davies to a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training on Saturday. The 31-year-old veteran has been in the big leagues for nine years and has a career 4.36 ERA. He spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 4-10 with a 5.19 ERA (4.74 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP with 91 walks and 174 strikeouts in 216 2/3 innings over 45 starts. Davies fell apart last year, posting a bloated 7.00 ERA and 1.66 WHIP with 39 walks and 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings over 18 starts for the Snakes. He'll be attempting to win a roster spot with the Nats in camp this year, but even if he joins the team's starting rotation at some point, Davies should be ignored in mixed fantasy leagues.

Zach Davies Ready To Return From Injured List
Zach Davies (back) is ready to return from the 15-day injured list, but whether he returns to start on Sunday against the San Diego Padres on the road could depend on what the weather looks like that day. There is expected to be heavy rain in San Diego on Sunday with Hurricane Hilary gaining strength off the coast of Mexico. If Sunday's game gets rained out, Davies could make another minor-league rehab start. The 30-year-old wasn't sharp in his latest rehab start at Triple-A Reno, allowing seven runs in three innings. Davies will be returning to a rough 7.38 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 46 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings (12 starts). If he does make Sunday's start against the Friars, avoid him in fantasy.

Zach Davies Placed On 15-Day Injured List
Zach Davies (back) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with lower-back inflammation and recalled left-hander Joe Mantiply from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. The back injury probably had something to do with Davies allowing nine earned runs while walking three in just 3 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. The poor performance dropped the 30-year-old to 1-5 on the season with a rough 7.38 ERA (4.69 FIP), 1.62 WHIP, 27 walks and only 46 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings over 12 starts in his second season in the desert. The soft-tossing Davies just doesn't have enough strikeout upside to be valuable in many mixed fantasy leagues. It's unclear who will take his spot in Arizona's rotation.

Zach Davies Will Be Activated And Start On Saturday
Zach Davies (oblique) will be activated from the IL on Saturday and will start against the Boston Red Sox. The 30-year-old right-hander has been out since April 9 with a left oblique strain. It's to be determined which current D-Backs starter will be demoted from the starting rotation but we should find out shortly. Davies logged two starts prior to his injury and put together an ugly 5.79 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and 7:6 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings. He can be left on the waiver wire for now.
