The New York Yankees placed left-handed relief pitcher Wandy Peralta (triceps) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 19) on Friday with a left-triceps strain and recalled pitcher Yoendrys Gomez from the minors in a corresponding move. Peralta will finish the 2023 season with a strong 2.83 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 54 relief innings pitched as well as four saves, but he was fortunate to have such a low ERA while walking 30 batters. The eight-year veteran will head to the free-agent market this winter. Peralta is good at limiting hard contact and generating plenty of swings and misses, but he's going to need to limit the free passes if he wants to continue being successful at the big-league level in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

San Diego Padres left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta (groin) threw a pitch in the ninth inning in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the visiting Seattle Mariners and immediately winced. It appeared to be a left-groin/hip injured based on his reaction, and he was forced to leave the game after allowing an earned run on one hit in just two-thirds of an inning. Just based on the way things looked, it would probably be a surprise if the 32-year-old veteran southpaw didn't land on the 15-day injured list heading into next week's All-Star break. The Dominican hurler definitely hasn't been as good as he was last year while pitching for the New York Yankees, as he came into Tuesday's contest with a 4.32 ERA (5.66 FIP) and 1.29 WHIP with only 20 strikeouts and 12 walks in 33 1/3 innings out of the Friars' bullpen--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

San Diego Padres relief pitchers Wandy Peralta and Luis Patino are both dealing with visa issues as pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training. Padres manager Mike Shildt told reporters on Sunday about the visa issues for the two aforementioned arms but did not expand beyond that. It's a fairly common issue with foreign players and it should be sorted out soon enough to give Peralta and Patino plenty of time to ramp up for the regular season. Peralta is coming off an excellent season with the New York Yankees in which he registered a 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 51:30 K/BB ratio to go along with four saves over 54 innings of relief. Patino, who started his professional career with the Padres, was optioned by the Rays last season before being traded to the Chicago White Sox for cash. The Sox designated him for assignment back in December before the Padres claimed him off waivers. He hasn't shown much in the majors so far (5.02 ERA, 1.496 WHIP in 136 1/3 career innings) but is still just 24 years old. Both players have a shot to contribute to the San Diego bullpen this season.--Jon Mathisen - RotoBaller

Free-agent left-hander Wandy Peralta and the San Diego Padres agreed to a four-year, $16.5 million deal on Wednesday that includes three opt-outs, according to sources. The deal is still pending a physical. Peralta got a bit lucky last year with the New York Yankees, posting a 2.83 ERA (5.05 FIP) and 1.22 WHIP with four saves, 30 walks and 51 strikeouts in 54 innings over 63 appearances out of the Yankees' bullpen. If Peralta wants to keep an ERA under 3.00 for the third straight season in 2024, the 32-year-old is going to need to show better control of his pitches. The veteran southpaw has a career strikeout rate of under 20 percent as well, so he relies on a high ground-ball rate to have success. Peralta will handle high-leverage relief innings in San Diego but probably won't see many save chances.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The New York Yankees and New York Mets are reportedly interested in free-agent relief pitcher Wandy Peralta. The 32-year-old pitched well for the Yankees last season, going 4-2 with four saves and 18 holds along with a 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 22.5% strikeout rate. The Yankees have maintained contact with Peralta over the offseason. He does not offer a ton of strikeout upside and will likely not see many save opportunities regardless of where he goes, but Peralta could be fantasy-relevant in saves-plus-holds leagues should he slot back into a middle-to-late-innings role.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller
