Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery was the 73rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. The former Iowa State star has never turned into a fantasy superstar. However, he has had several productive years.
Montgomery was the RB25 in his rookie season, totaling 242 rushing attempts for 889 yards and six touchdowns. More importantly, he had a career year in 2020. Montgomery was the RB4 that season, averaging 15.9 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. The former Iowa State star running back had 247 rushing attempts for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns.
While he hasn’t had another top-five finish, Montgomery had productive years in 2021 and 2022. He had at least 200 rushing attempts for over 800 yards and five touchdowns in both seasons. More importantly, the former Iowa State star joined the Lions this offseason and was a popular fantasy football draft pick.

What Did David Montgomery Accomplish In Week 2?
The former Bear had an excellent Week 1 performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, totaling 21 rushing attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown, scoring 13.4 fantasy points. He had another solid performance last week against the Seattle Seahawks.
Montgomery had 16 rushing attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown in Week 2, scoring 11.9 fantasy points in the loss. More importantly, the veteran averaged 4.2 yards per rushing attempt after averaging only 3.5 yards per attempt in Week 1.
Is David Montgomery Playing In Week 3?
Unfortunately, Montgomery suffered a thigh injury late in the game against the Seahawks. Initially, the injury looked severe after he was taken to the locker room on the cart. However, the former Iowa State star only suffered a thigh bruise.
While the injury isn’t season-ending, Montgomery said he might need a couple of weeks to recover. Meanwhile, head coach Dan Campbell said the running back was day-to-day less than 24 hours later. Regardless, the veteran didn’t practice on Wednesday because of the thigh injury.
Fantasy players should prepare for Montgomery to miss the Week 3 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. While the injury should only sideline him for a week or two, he likely won't play this Sunday.
Some potential last-minute waiver wire running back targets include Gus Edwards, Roschon Johnson, and Kendre Miller. All three are available in over 60% of ESPN leagues.
