Starting Pitcher Waiver Wire Pickups for Fantasy Baseball - Week 25

Mason Miller - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, MLB Prospects, Draft Sleepers

Welcome back, RotoBallers, to our starting pitcher fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups recommendations for Week 25 of the fantasy baseball season (September 11 - September 17). I'm Dawn Tepper, and I'll be digging through the waiver wires this week to see how I can help you through these last few weeks of the fantasy season.

With football season kicking off, it's easy to get caught up in all the excitement, but remember your fantasy baseball team! There's still plenty of time to make some tweaks and improve your roster for playoffs.

Today, we'll be taking a look at some promising recent prospect call-ups, some veteran arms who may be improving, and the best pitcher in the minor leagues to stash to help fantasy managers. Good luck on the waiver wire this week!

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball draft tools and resources:

Waiver Wire Pickups for Shallow Leagues

Pitcher pickup recommendations for leagues of any size

Ryan Pepiot, Los Angeles Dodgers (34% Rostered)

The Dodgers' right-hander Pepiot has shown outstanding control with a 0.86 ERA and 0.52 WHIP over two starts this season, limiting hard contact. Pepiot has a 2.84 FIP and a 22.7 strikeout rate in four games pitched.

Pepiot should be active in all leagues for his next start, which will come at home on Wednesday against a Padres team that is already contemplating shutting down some of their superstars, starting with Manny Machado. In the righty's final three starts, he will face the Tigers and then the Giants twice.

Michael King, New York Yankees (27% Rostered)

The New York Yankees are short starting pitchers, which means they need King and need to give him a chance to prove himself. He is scheduled to start against the Milwaukee Brewers at home on Saturday, providing a good opportunity to get a win while maintaining decent statistics and striking out a few batters.

If he continues to start regularly, he will face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park and the Toronto Blue Jays at home in the next two weeks before finishing the season with two games in a week – one against the Blue Jays and the other against the Royals.

Jose Quintana, New York Mets (20% Rostered)

Quintana got the win versus the Nationals on Tuesday, September 6, striking out four and allowing just one run and a walk in seven innings pitched. The veteran lefty has been impressive since making his season debut in late July after surgery to repair a stress fracture (ribcage). Quintana will take the mound early next week in a series at home versus the Diamondbacks.

Hyun Jin Ryu, Toronto Blue Jays (45% Rostered)

Even after striking out five batters last Wednesday, Ryu took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings in a 5-2 loss against the Athletics.

In Ryu's last five starts, he is 3-1 with a 2.65 ERA. He has yet to allow more than two earned runs in a start since his first outing of the year on August 1. Ryu's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Rangers on Tuesday, September 12.

Waiver Wire Pickups for Deeper Leagues

Pitcher pickup recommendations for deeper leagues

Mason Miller, Oakland Athletics (8% Rostered)

In his last four starts, Miller has gone 0-2 but has a 3.09 ERA, 27.5% strikeout rate, and a 2.84 FIP. The right-hander is scheduled to start on Monday against the Astros, but Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports he'll be on a pitch count.

Oakland Skipper Mark Kotsay has said that the plan for Miller for the rest of the season will most likely be as an opener. "I think it's a good role for him to be in control of his pitch count, his workload, and make sure he finishes through the end of the season."

Jose Butto, New York Mets (1% Rostered)

Butto had to settle for a no-decision against the Nationals on Wednesday. He allowed two runs on six hits and one walk and struck out six batters over 6.1 innings.

This was easily Butto's best outing of the season, picking up his first quality start and recording a season-high strikeout total (6). The right-hander has a good chance of staying with the Mets' rotation, given the solid outing and the fact that Carlos Carrasco is out for the season with an injury (pinky finger).

Johan Oviedo, Pittsburgh Pirates (24% Rostered)

Oviedo is 2-2 in five games started this year, with a 3.91 ERA. On Saturday versus Atlanta, he allowed three runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings in a no-decision. That game also included a bench-clearing when Oviedo threw a bit too inside for Ronald Acuna's liking.

Oviedo's splits are about the same, but the right-hander has a slight edge versus lefties, allowing .242/.333/.432. He faces the Pirates next Thursday, September 14.

Starting Pitcher Waiver Wire Stashes

Kyle Wright, Atlanta Braves (?% Rostered)

On September 5, Wright (shoulder) had an impressive performance with Triple-A Gwinnett, striking out seven and allowing one hit over 3.2 scoreless innings. On September 6, Wright said that he expects to make at least one more minor-league rehab start, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. He's expected to return this month and is worth stashing in all leagues.
