New York Jets running back Breece Hall appears to be ready to go for Week 1 and, according to coach Robert Saleh, will not be on a predetermined snap count. It sounds like everything that Hall fantasy managers ever wanted, coming off of an ACL tear in October. But it's not as rosy as it sounds.
The sophomore was the Jets' offense during his brief stint in 2022. Hall rushed 80 times for 463 yards and four scores in seven games and added another 218 yards and one score through the air. New York sat at a 5-2 record despite disastrous quarterback play.
The Jets brought in veteran running back Dalvin Cook midway through training camp to ease Hall's transition back to the playing field. Plus, the team found their quarterback, and Aaron Rodgers will command more offensive opportunities in his first season in East Rutherford.
Is Breece Hall Playing In Week 1 Against The Bills?
Both Hall and Cook, who is mostly recovered from an offseason surgery of his own, are scheduled to play. Coach Saleh noted that neither is on a strict snap count, per se, but the responsibilities of both could be reduced.
“I don’t know if I want to call it a snap count, but we are going to be smart with them. It’s not that we’re putting a snap count on. They’re just two really good football players.” - Robert Saleh
To further show their commitment to Hall's rehab program, the former second-round pick sat out of Monday's practice for a rest day. He has been mostly practicing with the team since being activated off of the PUP list in mid-August.
Should I Start Breece Hall In Fantasy In Week 1?
Fantasy managers in 12-team, redraft leagues likely selected Hall near the back end of the fourth round. On paper, he was drafted to be a starter, but there are several other running backs worth taking the gamble on this weekend, given Hall's workload uncertainty. He will be better served as more of an RB3/flex in fantasy lineups.
Alexander Mattison, David Montgomery, James Cook, Cam Akers, Dameon Pierce, James Conner, Raheem Mostert, and Jamaal Williams are all guys typically drafted around or after Hall that are better Week 1 options. We will see how the division of labor, and Hall's health, play out in the Jets' backfield.
