Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Cleveland Guardians Reportedly Designating Noah Syndergaard For Assignment

The Cleveland Guardians, per a tweet from Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes on Sunday afternoon, reportedly designated starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard for assignment.

Syndergaard started the year with the Los Angeles Dodgers after signing with the National League West club as a free agent, but struggled mightily, pitching to a 7.16 ERA and a 5.53 FIP in 12 starts spanning 55.1 innings. What was perhaps most alarming was the drop in strikeouts. Syndergaard registered just 38 strikeouts for the Dodgers.

Traded to Cleveland in a deal involving infielder Amed Rosario at the deadline, the veteran wasn’t as successful with the Guardians, logging a 5.40 ERA and a 7.35 FIP in 33.1 innings (six starts). Strikeout totals were again low, as the right-hander punched out just 18 for Cleveland.

Overall, the right-hander has walked just 19 batters this season, good for just 1.93 allowed per nine frames, but the lack of strikeouts significantly hampered his fantasy upside.

In the event that the longtime Met catches on with another team as a free agent before the end of the season, fantasy managers are probably better off looking elsewhere for rotation options or streaming help down the stretch due to Syndergaard’s low strikeout metrics.
