Jose Abreu Not Swinging, Won't Return Sunday
1 year agoHouston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) hasn't resumed swinging a bat, and manager Dusty Baker said it's unrealistic to expect Abreu to come off the 10-day injured list when he's first eligible to return this Sunday. Abreu has been sidelined since Aug. 10 with lower-back inflammation, and it wouldn't be a big surprise if he doesn't return until September if he continues to make slow progress from the injury. The 36-year-old former MVP has had a tough first year in Houston, slashing .234/.291/.343 with only 10 home runs, 16 doubles, 56 RBI and 43 runs scored in 110 games. He's been even worse so far in the second half, going 20-for-89 (.225) with three homers, 11 RBI, 22 K's and 14 runs scored in 23 starts. Yainer Diaz is starting at first base on Friday for the 'Stros and is hitting cleanup.
