The Washington Commanders head into 2023 with more uncertainty than most NFL teams when it comes to the quarterback position.
The team currently has three quarterbacks on its roster: Jacoby Brissett, Jake Fromm, and Sam Howell. All signs point to the quarterback battle being between Brissett and Howell.

Is Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett The Commanders' Starting Quarterback?
At one point, Sam Howell was being viewed as a potential first-round pick. But after completing just 62.5% of his passes in his final year at North Carolina, Howell fell to the sixth round in the 2022 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he started one game, going 11-for-19 for 169 yards and a touchdown.
Jacoby Brissett, who the Commanders signed this offseason, started 11 games for the Cleveland Browns last season while Deshaun Watson was suspended. He completed 64% of his passes and threw for 12 touchdowns.
Brissett is a reliable veteran, but Sam Howell has been getting the majority of first-team reps in camp so far, a sign that he is expected to be the team's starting quarterback.
The fact that Ron Rivera has not officially named Howell the starter might not be a great sign for his job security as the season progresses, but he seems to have the starting job to open the 2023 season.
Sam Howell Fantasy Football Outlook
Sam Howell is an intriguing player. He suffered from a drop in accuracy in his final college season, but he also showcased his rushing ability. Howell ran for 828 yards and 11 touchdowns in his final year as a Tarheel.
Howell also rushed for a touchdown in his lone NFL start. His ability to run the ball boosts his fantasy ceiling, and the fact that his head coach has experience scheming up plays for rushing quarterbacks is a plus.
Right now, Howell is being drafted as the QB30, with just two projected starting quarterbacks going behind him on average. However, his rushing ability makes him a potential QB2 in fantasy, assuming he's able to improve his accuracy and fend off Brissett.
