Sam Howell Still Not Labeled Commanders Starting QB
1 year agoWashington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell hasn't been named the team's starter. While head coach Ron Rivera has been pleased with Howell's progress this offseason, he hasn't made things official. "Sam did a great job," said Rivera, referencing the signal-caller's showing during joint practice sessions with the Baltimore Ravens. "He did some really good things, threw some really good balls. His ball placement, his accuracy was what we needed; decision making was very plus." The 22-year-old, who appeared in only one game last season, finished Friday's preseason win over the Browns by going 9-for-12 for 77 yards and a touchdown, so he's looked good so far. Assuming Howell continues to trend in a positive direction, he'll likely be under center for Week 1. But he has a way to go before establishing himself as a trustworthy fantasy option, although the hiring of former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could dramatically accelerate his growth.
