Tyler Glasnow - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Draft Sleepers, MLB Injury News

Fantasy baseball injury updates and injury reports for MLB pitchers as of 8/10/2023, including Shane McClanahan, Tyler Glasnow, Carlos Rodon, Jordan Romano, and more.

Key fantasy baseball pitchers are added to the injury headlines every week, and this week is certainly no different. The MLB postseason is just over two months away, so fantasy managers must continue to stay locked in and monitor the latest injury updates. Let's take a look at the top injured pitchers including Shane McClanahan, Tyler Glasnow, Carlos Rodon, Jordan Romano, and more.

This is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for pitchers as of Aug 10, 2023. We'll be covering all positions throughout the week, so stay tuned. Some players on this list impact fantasy baseball more than others, but with leagues of all shapes and sizes, you never know which guys will force fantasy managers to search waiver wires in hopes of finding adequate replacements.

Shane McClanahan Injury Update

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan (forearm) is unlikely to pitch again this year. "Highly unlikely he will pitch again this year but again, I'm speaking out of turn until Dr. Meister weighs in and then when Shane makes a decision," manager Kevin Cash said on Tuesday.

McClanahan visited with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday and was scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister this week as well, and apparently he didn't get favorable recommendations on his left-forearm injury. There's a possibility that the 26-year-old southpaw will need Tommy John surgery, which would also sideline him for most, if not all, of the 2024 season. It's a crushing blow for the Rays and fantasy managers, as McClanahan is a fantasy ace when healthy.

Tyler Glasnow Injury Update

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that right-hander Tyler Glasnow (back) played catch on Wednesday and that the team is "optimistic" that he will make his next start on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians. However, the Rays probably won't know for sure until Saturday morning.

The 29-year-old was scratched from his last scheduled start on Sunday due to back spasms, but he has rebounded nicely since then and is tentatively set to toe the rubber this weekend in a good matchup against Cleveland. It's great news for the Rays' starting rotation after they learned this week that left-hander Shane McClanahan (forearm) is going to miss the rest of the year. Glasnow has the makings of a fantasy ace when he's right, and he's gone 5-3 on the year with a nice 3.15 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 96 K's in 68 2/3 innings (12 starts).

Carlos Rodon Injury Update

New York Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon (hamstring) landed on the injured list on Monday for the second time this year with a "low-grade" left hamstring strain, according to manager Aaron Boone. Rodon wanted to pitch through the injury, but the Yankees made the final call to put him on the IL. However, he will continue throwing off flat ground and could potentially only miss the minimum of 15 days.

Rodon's season was delayed due to a forearm strain and back discomfort after he signed a six-year, $162 million deal in free agency. The 30-year-old southpaw didn't make his season debut until July 7, and he has a poor 7.33 ERA with 25 K's and 18 walks in his six starts this year. Needless to say, Rodon has been a big fantasy bust in his first year in the Bronx. Randy Vasquez will likely fill in for Rodon in the rotation while he's out. (NYPost)

Jordan Romano Injury Update

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Jordan Romano (back) throw another bullpen session on Wednesday. It was the second time in three days that Romano has thrown, which is a good sign. The hope is that Romano is cleared to return to the Blue Jays bullpen soon after Wednesday's session.

The right-hander has been out since the end of July due to inflammation in his lower back. In the meantime, Jordan Hicks and Erik Swanson should see a majority of the save chances in Toronto.

Nathan Eovaldi Injury Update

Texas Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (forearm) threw a short 15-20-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday. The right-hander last appeared on July 18, when he threw six scoreless innings in a start against the Rays and recently reported he was pain-free after throwing from 75 feet over the weekend. A lengthier bullpen session could come Saturday if all is well following his bullpen on Wednesday.

After signing a two-year deal prior to the season, the 33-year-old owns a tidy 2.69 ERA across 19 starts for the Rangers despite seeing his K-BB% dip to 16.1%, his lowest mark since 2019. Nonetheless, Eovaldi's eventual return would give the Rangers a potentially lethal rotation alongside trade-deadline acquisitions Max Scherzer and Jordan Montgomery.

Merrill Kelly Injury Update

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly (leg) left his start early on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a right-leg cramp. Normally a leg cramp wouldn't be considered very serious, but Kelly just missed a month with a blood clot in his right calf.

If this injury is related at all, it could send the 34-year-old starter back to the injured list. The good news is Kelly was strong in a no-decision before departing, tossing six shutout innings while allowing six hits, walking two and striking out two to drop his season ERA to 3.05. Hopefully his leg cramp turns out to be nothing significant and he's able to make his next start in a great matchup next Monday against the last-place Colorado Rockies.

Jose Alvarado Injury Update

Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado (hand, elbow) had some cramping in both of his hands recently, according to manager Rob Thomson, so the team will wait to send him on a minor-league rehab assignment this week. Instead, he'll throw another live session on Thursday. There is no concern about his left elbow. The 28-year-old was initially expected to begin his rehab assignment on Thursday.

Alvarado has been out since early July, but once he starts a rehab assignment, it shouldn't be long before he rejoins Philly's bullpen. When healthy, he's been lights-out for the Phils, posting a stingy 1.38 ERA (2.31 FIP), 1.15 WHIP, six saves and 39 strikeouts in 26 relief innings. Alvarado should return to being in the picture for saves once he's back.
