What is Hideki Matsuyama’s Course History At TPC Southwind?
The FedEx St. Jude Championship enters its second year on the PGA Tour schedule. It was played as a WGC event from 2019 to 2021 and was known as the FedEx St. Jude Classic from 1958 to 2018. Hideki Matsuyama has made three career starts at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He has amassed a 68.17 scoring average at TPC Southwind across those three appearances. Matsuyama logged a tie for second in 2021, T20 in 2020, and T43 in 2019.
What is Hideki Matsuyama’s Recent Form?
Hideki Matsuyama has put together a solid 2023, highlighted by his exceptional play in the majors. He finished T13 at The Open Championship and T32 at the U.S. Open. In addition, he finished T30 at the 3M Open two weeks ago but missed the cut at last week’s Wyndham Championship. Matsuyama has struggled with his putting and around the green in recent months. He has lost strokes putting and around the green in three of his last five starts.
Hideki Matsuyama's Outlook For The FedEx St. Jude Championship
Matsuyama finished as runner-up at last year’s tournament and coming into this week Matsuyama’s odds are currently at 35/1 at most sportsbooks. This week’s field features the top 70 in FedEx Cup standings and will be stronger field than what Matsuyama has seen in his last couple of starts. Despite the strong field Matsuyama has shown the ability to rise to the occasion evidenced by his past finishes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and his performances in the majors this year.
That said, Matsuyama’s recently cold-putter and around the green game will need to improve significantly this week if he’s to have a chance and crack the top 50 and play in the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoff next week. This event has routinely required golfers to be accurate off the tee and precise on approach and last year over 45% of approach shots were taken from 150-200 yards. So it’s worth mentioning that this year Matsuyama ranks 73rd in driving accuracy and in the 91st percentile for greens in regulation on approach shots from 150-200 yards in the fairway.
