Fantasy Baseball Impact Of Zack Greinke Being Placed On The 15-Day Injured List

The Kansas City Royals placed veteran starting pitcher Zack Greinke on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday per a tweet from the American League Central club’s official Twitter account. According to the team’s tweet, the injured list placement is due to right posterior elbow soreness. Additionally, also per the tweet, the move was retroactive to August 7.

Greinke has made 22 starts so far this season, struggling at times for both the Royals and fantasy managers. The starter has pitched to a 5.53 ERA and a 5.14 FIP in 110.2 innings in the process. He’s striking out 5.94 batters per nine frames while surrendering 1.22 walks and 1.87 home runs per nine innings.

Per the Royals’ tweet, Kansas City recalled reliever Taylor Hearn from Triple-A to take Greinke’s place on the active. The 28-year-old Hearn has experience as a starter before, making a combined 24 starts during the 2021 and 2022 seasons for the Texas Rangers. However, he’s mostly worked as a reliever both in the Majors and minors this year.

In 7.1 Major League innings, the right-hander has logged a 14.73 ERA and a 7.36 FIP while adding seven strikeouts and six walks. He’s found much more success at Triple-A, logging a 3.66 ERA and a 4.07 FIP in 39.1 innings spanning 24 appearances, two of which were starts. Fantasy managers in search of streaming options in saves+holds leagues are probably better off looking elsewhere.
