The Kansas City Chiefs traded for speedy wideout Kadarius Toney in October. In return, the team gave the New York Giants a 2023 third-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick. We haven't seen many snaps from Toney in a Chiefs uniform so far, but there's no doubt the talent is there.
Entering the 2023 season, Toney appeared to be a top target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the passing game. However, a knee injury has knocked him out of training camp, putting his developing connection with Mahomes on hold.
Will Toney be ready by Week 1? Should you draft him this season? Let's dive in.
Will Kadarius Toney Be Ready By Week 1?
Toney left the first day of training camp early after tweaking his knee. After additional tests, it was revealed the 24-year-old wideout tore his meniscus and needed surgery to repair it. At the time, the Chiefs were still optimistic that the former 2021 first-round pick would be ready for the team's season opener.
Just two weeks later, Kansas City has that same optimism. The team expects the wideout to be suited up for the season opener on Thursday, September 7 against the Detroit Lions. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spoke about Toney's injury on Tuesday and said he should be good to go "barring any setbacks."
Toney still hasn't returned to the practice field this offseason. But with the team expressing confidence that the wideout will be ready in less than one month, his return should be on the horizon.
Kadarius Toney 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
Since being drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Toney has shown glimpses of his upside on the field. However, injuries have held him back from fully unleashing his potential. He missed most of training camp in 2021 with a hamstring issue. He has then gone on to miss 15 games over his first two seasons with various injuries.
Despite Toney likely suiting up in Week 1, he remains a high-risk, high-reward player in fantasy. Being tied to the Chiefs' offense can really help the young wideout breakout in his third NFL season. He can easily turn into Mahomes' favorite target, and that's the type of player you want on your fantasy rosters.
Toney will enter the season with a high ceiling and floor. The Chiefs love the 24-year-old wideout, and they will definitely get him his fair share of touches in 2023 if he stays healthy. It's risky to select him, but these types of moves can pay off big-time in the end.
