One and Done Selections - The FedEx St. Jude Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Rory McIlroy
Alternate - Harris English
I guess one small, insignificant silver lining to this year’s OAD contest is that I still have some good players left for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which get underway this week in my home state of Tennessee. Fat lotta good it’s gonna do me, but maybe it will be useful to some of you that still have OAD hopes alive.
TPC Southwind isn’t exactly a textbook layout for Rory McIlroy’s game, but he’s still scored top-12 finishes in half of his six career St. Jude starts, including a T4 in 2019 in a tournament that he had a very real chance to win on Sunday. With Rors still left in the holster, it makes sense to fire now, as I look for the three-time FedEx Cup champion to make yet another strong Playoff push in an effort to salvage a year in which he yet again failed to win a major championship. Speaking truthfully, this is the perfect “Rory Event”, as it presents a fairly tough test of tee-to-green ability and holds meaning, but not too much meaning
Yearly Earnings - $7,121,803
Yearly Cuts Made - 29/31
Josh Bennett - Matthew Fitzpatrick
Alternate - Collin Morikawa
I’m getting low on candidates that are actually good golfers in this contest, I burned through most of the top golfers in the fields the next three weeks, so I’m rolling this week with a guy I’m not sure I think is in the greatest form of all time, but seems to play this course well. The good news is that he’s gaining strokes in all main strokes gained categories except for around the green, so he has the potential to go off at any time with good off the tee and approach. Maybe some concern about an injury this season, but I think anyone with injuries is putting that to the side for the next couple weeks to give them the best shot at winning the playoffs. With three top 6 finishes in his four attempts at this event, there’s no reason a recent major champion like Fitz can’t take down this event.

Spencer Aguiar - Tom Kim
Alternate -Wyndham Clark
I fully expect Tom Kim to withdraw with the way this season has gone. I do love him from a contrarian sense because nobody is going to want to use him, but this has been a season to forget.
Yearly Earnings - $6,081,959
Yearly Cuts Made - 19/31
Byron Lindeque - Viktor Hovland
Adam Schenk shooting -5 on Friday to make the cut on the number one of the most heroic anti-climaxes of the season for me. I had him in a third of my DFS lineups and he was our OAD selection last week, scraping together a whopping $16,340 for his T64.
Onwards and upwards to a much more skilled and talented golfer, by the name of Viktor Hovland who can ball strike ANY golf course to death with his precise power off the tee and pin point placement of his irons. In fact, outside of Cam Young, nobody in this field has a better weighted good shot % than Hovland (meaning he gains half a stroke on a single approach shot from these proximities).
Ball striker bliss aside, Hovland is a little sporadic with the putter, but when he gets the rock rolling, he putts like a rock n roller! Even more impressive, for Viktor, is that his ARG game over the last two-dozen rounds is not top-30 in the field of the PGA’s 70 best golfers. On the season he is 59th of 70, which has always held him back from the elite upside his ball striking affords him.
Now that his game is more well rounded than ever, we can anticipate Hovland to be a little more surgical around the greens, on the off occasion his brilliant ball striking lets him down. After a win at the Memorial on US soil, expect the Hovland floodgates to open and that trophy cabinet to look like a sardine can over the next 5-10 years.
