Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz was the 137th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Schultz had a quiet college career, totaling only 55 receptions for 555 receiving yards and five touchdowns in three years at Stanford.
Unfortunately, the former Cardinal tight end barely made an impact over his first two NFL seasons. Schultz had only 13 receptions on 19 targets for 122 receiving yards and zero touchdowns over his first 27 career games. However, things changed in 2020 when he took over for an injured Blake Jarwin.
Schultz had a breakout season in 2020, totaling 63 receptions on 89 targets for 615 receiving yards and four touchdowns. More importantly, the veteran tight end improved on those numbers the following year. He had 78 receptions on 104 targets for 808 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 2021, all career highs. Furthermore, Schultz was the TE3 that season, averaging 10 half-point PPR fantasy points per game.

What Did Dalton Schultz Accomplish In 2022?
Following his career year in 2021, the Cowboys placed the franchise tag on the veteran tight end. Unfortunately, Schultz struggled with injuries last season. Furthermore, his production fell off a cliff without the franchise quarterback.
The former Stanford tight end had 57 receptions on 89 targets for 577 receiving yards and five touchdowns last year. Despite seeing his numbers regress from the previous season, Schultz still ended the year second on the team in all four categories, only finishing behind CeeDee Lamb.
However, Dallas decided not to use the franchise tag on the veteran tight end for the season consecutive year. Instead, they placed the franchise tag on Tony Pollard, allowing Schultz to hit the open market.
After spending the first five years of his career with the Cowboys, the former Stanford tight end signed a one-year contract with the Texans.
Is Dalton Schultz Injured Or Healthy?
Schultz was one of several free agent additions Houston made on offense. However, the veteran tight end might be the most important. He will give C.J. Stroud a reliable target in the middle part of the field.
Unfortunately, Schultz took a shot from teammate Jimmie Ward in practice earlier this week. Thankfully, head coach DeMeco Ryans says the tight end is fine.
While the veteran lacks significant fantasy upside in Houston, Schultz is an ideal safe floor low-end TE1 draft target for fantasy players.
