Veteran free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott was the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. The star running back had an excellent college career, totaling 592 rushing attempts for 3,961 yards and 43 touchdowns in three years at Ohio State.
More importantly, Elliott set the NFL on fire as a rookie. The former Buckeye superstar had 322 rushing attempts for 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2016, leading the NFL in rushing attempts and yards. Furthermore, the superstar led the league in rushing yards per game in each of his first three seasons.
The former Ohio State superstar was one of the top running backs over the first four years in the league. Unfortunately, Elliott’s production started to slip over the past few seasons. After averaging 4.5 yards per rushing attempt in three of his first four seasons, the veteran has averaged 4.2 yards per rushing attempt or less each of the past three years.

What Did Ezekiel Elliott Accomplish In 2022?
Last year Elliott was the RB19, averaging 11.8 half-point PPR fantasy points per game, the lowest average of his career. Furthermore, the former Ohio State star had 231 rushing attempts for 876 yards, both career lows. More importantly, he averaged only 3.8 yards per rushing attempt. Last year was the first time Elliott didn’t average at least four yards per rushing attempt in his career.
However, the veteran running back remained fantasy-relevant thanks to his role at the goal line. Elliott had 12 rushing touchdowns in 2022, the second-highest total of his career. Furthermore, he had a 5.2% rushing touchdown rate, a career-high.
Is Ezekiel Elliott A Good Fit For The Patriots?
Unfortunately, Elliott became too expensive for the Cowboys. The veteran running back got released earlier this offseason. While the former Ohio State star isn’t the elite running back he was years ago, Elliott can still help an NFL team.
Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have done their homework on veteran running backs over the past few weeks. They have had conversations with Dalvin Cook and Leonard Fournette. More importantly, the Patriots brought in Elliott for a visit today.
After losing Damien Harris in free agency, New England lacks a clear-cut No. 2 running back on the roster. If Elliott joins the Patriots, it’s not the worst fit in the world. Rhamondre Stevenson will maintain his lead role, with Elliott mixing in at the goal line and on third down.
