The Los Angeles Rams traded superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins this offseason. The Dolphins gave up a 2023 third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long in exchange for the six-time Pro Bowler. Ramsey was set to line up opposite Xavien Howard to begin the year to form one of the best cornerback duos in the entire NFL.
However, that might be placed on hold. Ramsey was carted off the field in Thursday's training camp practice with a knee injury. The timeline appears to be much worse than what was initially reported.
Is Ramsey out for the season? Will he suit up for the Dolphins in 2023? Let's dive in.
Is Jalen Ramsey Out for the Season?
When Jalen Ramsey was carted off the field during the Dolphins' practice, there was concern that he wouldn't be available for Week 1. The original report was that the star cornerback was set to miss 6-8 weeks following an injury to his meniscus. That would have put the 28-year-old on track to make his debut between Week 1 and Week 3.
However, it appears Ramsey will be out much longer than that. According to head coach Mike McDaniel, the cornerback underwent surgery on his meniscus at 1 p.m. EST on Friday. He will now probably be out longer than his initial six to eight-week timeline.
The Dolphins are still hopeful that Ramsey will be back at some point during the regular season. The injury doesn't appear to be season-ending, and he should suit up for Miami later this season.
When Can We Expect Jalen Ramsey's Return?
It's tough to put a timeline on Jalen Ramsey's recovery process following his surgery on Friday. But it will likely be a while until we see the cornerback in a Dolphins uniform, maybe even four to five months.
Ramsey also gave light on his situation on Thursday, talking about his "end of the season push." That means we will probably not see the superstar until later in the year. December is a possible return for the three-time All-Pro corner.
If you play in an individual defensive player (IDP) league, you can always draft Ramsey and put him in your IR spot to begin the season. He's a great stash in these types of leagues, given his consistency at the cornerback position. The former Florida State alum has totaled 75-plus tackles and four interceptions in back-to-back years for the first time in his career.
