Since Robbie Gould went undrafted in the 2005 NFL Draft, he has been one of the most dominant kickers in the league. The 2023 season will mark Gould's 19th year in the NFL. He played 11 seasons with the Chicago Bears, six with the San Francisco 49ers, and one with the New York Giants.
Gould has spent the last six years delivering big kicks in San Francisco. However, the 49ers let him walk in free agency this offseason after the team was unwilling to sign the 40-year-old veteran to a long-term deal.
So is Gould still a free agent? Which teams would be a good fit for Gould? Let's take a look.
Is Robbie Gould a Free Agent?
Despite training camp starting within the next week for all NFL teams, Robbie Gould is still a free agent. The veteran remains the best available kicker on the free agent market ahead of players like former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ryan Succop.
Gould was once again highly efficient last year for the 49ers, hitting 27-of-32 field goals and 50-of-51 extra points in the regular season. The former 49ers kicker also went a perfect 13-for-13 on field goals and extra points in the postseason in 2022.
The 40-year-old veteran should find a new home before the season begins. Even at his age, he remains one of the most accurate kickers in the league. Gould has also never missed a kick in the postseason -- going 29-for-29 on field goals and 39-for-39 on extra points since 2005.
Which Teams Would Be a Good Fit For Gould?
It's almost unlikely that Gould won't be on a team by Week 1. Teams like the Packers, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, and Dallas Cowboys could be great fits for him in 2023. Those four teams might need a steady leg after moving on from veteran kickers this off-season.
The Broncos moved on from Brandon McManus for Elliott Fry, a kicker with just six career field goal attempts. The Packers let go of Crosby and drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Rams let Matt Gay walk in free agency for an undrafted rookie in Tanner Brown, and the Cowboys got rid of Brett Maher for Tristan Vizcaino.
All four teams would also make Gould a solid draft candidate in most fantasy leagues. The Cowboys, though, would probably be the best landing spot for the veteran, given Maher finished as the third-best fantasy kicker with the team last year.
