The MLB season is set to continue on Friday, and we have a handful of new injury headlines to monitor. Let's take a look at injured hitters Yordan Alvarez, Aaron Judge, and Tommy Pham.
This is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for hitters as of July 14, 2023. We'll be covering all positions throughout the week, so stay tuned. Yordan Alvarez Injury Update
Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (oblique) will start his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday. At long last, Alvarez is getting very close to rejoining the Astros after going on the injured list in early June with a right-oblique strain.
The 26-year-old left-handed slugger needs to be rostered in all fantasy leagues because of his ability to carry fantasy teams with his offensive prowess. Barring a setback, Alvarez should be back in Houston's starting lineup by late next week. Before his injury, he was slashing a strong .277/.388/.589 with a .978 OPS, 17 home runs, 12 doubles, 55 RBI and 41 runs scored in just 57 games (242 plate appearances).
Aaron Judge Injury Update
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that there is no timetable for outfielder Aaron Judge's (toe) return and that he has more steps to take, such as running the bases and minor-league rehab games. Cashman said that Judge will be back at some point in the second half. Fantasy managers were hoping that Judge would be back shortly after the start of the second half of the season this weekend, but it looks like that's not happening.
The 31-year-old superstar did some light hitting on the Fourth of July, but he still has a ways to go before he's ready to be activated from the injured list. All fantasy managers can do is hope for a quick recovery and that Judge isn't affected negatively in any way by the torn ligament in his big right toe when he does make it back.
Tommy Pham Injury Update
New York Mets outfielder Tommy Pham (groin) was re-evaluated on Wednesday and is considered day-to-day with right-groin soreness, according to the team. Pham left the finale of the first half of the season on Sunday against the San Diego Padres after tweaking his groin, but it sounds like he'll avoid a trip to the injured to begin the second half this weekend.
The 35-year-old should be back on Friday to start a series against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, but fantasy managers will want to check back on Friday just to be sure. Pham had a strong first half for the Mets and leads the team with an .836 OPS through 206 at-bats. With the Mets well out of first place in the National League East, he could be a trade candidate come the Aug. 1 deadline.
