One and Done Selections - The Genesis Scottish Open
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Wyndham Clark
Alternate - Alex Smalley
We’re not in Silvis anymore…the PGA Tour makes a big leap across the pond this week from the paint-by-numbers birdie extravaganza at the John Deere Classic to the intricacies of links golf at the Genesis Scottish Open.
This type of environment isn’t for everyone, and I’ve found myself searching for “dual-threat” golfers this week…meaning players that can take advantage of this gettable layout in good scoring conditions or be able to grind things out if the weather gets nasty. Wyndham Clark fits that bill for me, as he clearly has the ability to pour in birdies, while his short game is notably underrated.
Clark looked good on this Renaissance Club layout last year with a rock-solid T16 in tough conditions. The Denver native has brought his game to a whole new level in 2023, winning against elite fields at the U.S. Open and Wells Fargo Championship thanks to his dramatically improved approach play. Success often breeds more success in golf, and it looks like Clark is going to be a dangerous player the rest of the season thanks to his growing confidence in himself to close out tournaments.
Barbasol: Taylor Pendrith
Alternate - James Hahn
Yearly Earnings - $6,731,019
Yearly Cuts Made - 23/25
Josh Bennett - Wyndham Clark
Alternate - Adam Scott
It’s no secret by now that Wyndham is having a crazy good season. Two wins in huge fields, one of those being a major, shows he is a big time player now (at least for this year!). I wish I had jumped on the bandwagon earlier, but he isn’t showing many signs of slowing down the form, so it’s as good a time as any to roll with him for this contest. Even not playing at the level he is now in this event last year, he still managed a 16th place finish, so I see no reason why he can’t improve on that this year. The overall game is solid, but the most promising part of his game on a course like this is his great putting skill, which is always important on links-type courses. That alone should keep him competitive for the weekend.

Spencer Aguiar - Tommy Fleetwood
Alternate - Matthew Fitzpatrick
Fleetwood ranked sixth in my model for scoring at difficult tracks, highlighting this Links-style nature that has seen him win in Europe countless times. Wouldn't it be something if the Englishman broke his PGA Tour winless drought by winning an event in... you got it... Europe.
Barbasol: Vincent Norrman
Alternate - Akshay Bhatia
Yearly Earnings - $4,963,131
Yearly Cuts Made - 14/25
Byron Lindeque - Wyndham Clark
Chez seemed way more primed to perform well at the JDC considering he had lead the field in approach the week before, only to finish T35 in a watered down field. It appears that lightning only Strakas once, as Sepp managed to play his way to victory with an incredible 62 on Sunday, landing the Ketchup Kings an outright win, but no OAD $.
The Scottish Open is going to be a windy mess, which presents an opportunity to be contrarian despite choosing a “well known” golfer. The recent US Open winner is just that guy. Wyndham Clark has incredible length off the tee, iron play that has been top tier for most of the season and a putter that has seen him hoist trophies at the Wells Fargo and the US Open this year. We are hoping that his 45-1 price tag keeps the public off our thoroughbred that is being treated like a dark horse on the odds board. Ideally he wins his third tournament of the year at an event he finished 16th at in his maiden appearance last year.

Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means options like Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with their 15% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in multiple names taking up 5% of the pie
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Wyndham Clark this week as the selection and Rickie Fowler as the alternate.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
