One and Done Selections - The Rocket Mortgage Classic
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Rickie Fowler
Alternate - Austin Eckroat
The resurgent Fowler just keeps coming in 2023. The 34-year-old displayed lots of moxie at the Travelers Championship last week by firing a brilliant third-round 60, for what was his lowest career round on the PGA Tour, after what had to be a very tough emotional roller-coaster of a week at the U.S. Open.
Anyone that's followed golf for the past few months should know that Rickie's renaissance is not smoke and mirrors. He's gained strokes on Approach in 13 of 14 starts this year, as well as gaining an average of 6.4 strokes T2G over his last five tournaments. A win feels sooo close, but never a prolific closer, he’s struggled to get over that last hump. With the pressure cooker of the U.S. Open now behind him, maybe Fowler gets back into the winner's circle in the relatively low-stress environment of the Rocket Mortgage.

Josh Bennett - Stephan Jaeger
Alternate - Sungjae Im
Jaeger is quietly having a very good PGA season, he’s only missed 2 cuts in the 2023 calendar year and yet you don’t hear much about him. Doesn’t get talked about too much, doesn’t usually garner much ownership in DFS, just flies under the radar and continues to put up good performances. Now, he hasn’t really made any runs at winning, so maybe that’s why everyone stays away a bit. However, if we know anything about golfers that just play good golf for a while, eventually they will put the whole thing together for four days and challenge the top of the leaderboard or even win it. This seems like it could be a great spot for Jaeger to do that, given he finished 5th at this event last year. It is definitely not out of the realm of possibility that he puts it together for the whole weekend and adds a win to his already pretty good season.

Spencer Aguiar - Thomas Detry
Alternate - Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler would be the sensible route to go if you wanted to secure a payday, although I assume anyone in my position can't exactly afford one of the more popular selections to be the choice when they are playing from behind.
For that reason, enter Thomas Detry, the man that I am so overweight to this week that I might be puking up 'Mom's Spaghetti' if things go south early in Detroit.
Detry's recent form has left a little to be desired after a quick start to his 2023 campaign, but the profile reminds me a lot of what we saw from Cameron Davis here during his 2021 victory. Detry can score with his proximity from 0-150 yards when adding it to his putting nature (13th in this field when mixing both aspects into one), and the combination of distance and various other intangibles allowed him to grade 12th overall for me in weighted strokes gained total.
His inability this season to render high-end finishes might be something that holds him back from reaching where I believe is possible, but that is a gamble I am willing to take on a golfer that will be wildly under the radar in all contests.

Byron Lindeque - Brandon Wu
Xander Schauffele just could not get out of gear last week, finishing T19 and not really giving us the slew of T10s he rattled off entering the week. At this point, it feels like we are going to have to load up a little more on riskier plays as we are still doing pretty solid amongst the RB staff, but we need a winner, and we need multiple.
This week the Ketchup Kings are going to be looking for a rather contrarian play that has upside who others may not be on. Brandon Wu is is going to be that guy for us! He is a birdie machine and he is also really good in non-elevated events, with a T9, T23 and 3rd in his last three of these types of events. He sits inside the top-20 in good shot percentage, meaning that he gains over half a shot on a single approach shot, quite regularly.
If he can pull off a win for us in Detroit after multiple top 10s in his last few starts that have lacked star power in the field, that would be epic! Let’s go Brandon!

Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Rickie Fowler got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 25% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in multiple names ranking for 5% of the pie.
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Ludvig Aberg this week as the selection and Rickie Fowler as the alternate.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
