Luis Matos Moves Up To Second In Batting Order Thursday
2 years agoSan Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Matos is being moved up to the two-hole in a matchup against Padres left-hander Blake Snell on Thursday. Matos debuted out of the two-spot on June 14 but has since hit no higher than fifth in his six ensuing starts. The 21-year-old has more than held his own through his first seven big-league contests, hitting .304 with a double, two steals, a hefty 20.7% BB%, and a .796 OPS across 29 trips to the plate. Matos also sports a .383 xwOBA that is above his impressive .371 wOBA to this point. Perhaps most impressive is the fact he's struck out in just one of his 29 plate appearances so far, although he'll be in tough to keep that up against Snell and his 29.2% K% on the season.

Luis Matos A Favorite To Platoon In Right Field
2 months agoMLB.com's Maria Guardado writes that San Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Matos' impressive stint in winter ball should make him the favorite to serve as Mike Yastrzemski's platoon partner in right field to open the 2025 season. However, the Giants could also take a long look at former infield prospect Marco Luciano, who is expected to make the transition from the infield to outfield this year. Matos, 23, went back and forth between the big-league club and Triple-A Sacramento six times in 2024 and ended up hitting just .213/.237/.347 with five home runs and 25 RBI in 45 games for the Gigantes in his second year in the big leagues. He made plenty of contact and limited his strikeouts, but the quality of his contact was weak. Unless Matos develops more power and starts hitting the ball harder, he'll remain a fourth outfield type for San Fran.

Luis Matos Recalled, Mark Canha Hits Injured List
6 months agoSan Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Matos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento for the final game of the regular season as outfielder Mark Canha (finger) was placed on the injured list with a right thumb sprain. Matos is not penciled into the starting nine and will be available off the bench as the Giants face the St. Louis Cardinals in their season finale. Matos has posted a .216/.240/.351 line across 44 games at the major league level this summer. The Giant offense is best to fade in DFS this afternoon as they will face Cardinal prospect Michael McGreevy who enters Sunday with a strong 2.40 ERA.

Luis Matos Demoted To Double-A
8 months agoThe San Francisco Giants have demoted outfielder Luis Matos from Triple-A Sacramento to Double-A Richmond. It is a curious move as Matos, 22, was once one of the teams' top prospects and has spent time in the big leagues the last two seasons. Although he struggled with the Giants this season in 40 games, he was hitting well for Sacramento. With Sacramento, Matos has hit .242 with eight homers, 37 RBI and six stolen bases in 227 at-bats. Despite his demotion, Matos is still very young and has the ability to reach his potential with some more seasoning on the farm. As a member of the 40-man roster, it would not be a surprise to see Matos get another opportunity with the big-league club this summer. As it stands, he can remain on the waiver wire.

Luis Matos Homers In Win Wednesday
9 months agoSan Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Matos turned in a solid game in his team's 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Matos went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to help propel his team to victory. The 22-year-old's homer in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie and wound up being the difference in the ballgame for the Giants. Matos is hitting .253 with three homers, 10 runs, and 21 RBI across 99 at-bats in 2024. He has been swinging a hot bat of late, hitting .381 over his past seven contests. Matos is worth a look in NL-only formats while he's hot at the plate.
