Marcelo Mayer Hits Fourth Double-A Home Run
2 years agoBoston Red Sox shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer hit his fourth home run of the season since being promoted to Double-A Portland. He missed a home run in his previous at-bat, being robbed at the fence by outfielder Johan Rojas in the at-bat before his home run. After starting the season with a .890 OPS in 35 games with High-A Greenville, the 2021 first-round pick carries a .157/.228/.371 line with three stolen bases, 10 runs, and nine RBI in 18 games with Portland. The top prospect is far from the majors, but his impressive offensive skills make him one of the top prospects in dynasty leagues.

Marcelo Mayer Gets A Start At Second Base On Wednesday
1 week agoBoston Red Sox shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer went 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-4 Grapefruit League win over the Tigers. The 22-year-old is having a good spring, now 11-for-31 (.355), but it wasn't just the bat that stood out on Wednesday. Boston's third-ranked prospect was manning second base for the Red Sox, not the supposed front-runners for the job, Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton (Vaughn Grissom was optioned on Wednesday). With just over a week left in camp and no decision on who the starting second baseman is yet, it throws some additional intrigue into the mix. The former first-round draft pick is a shortstop by trade, but his path to playing time is currently blocked by veteran Trevor Story. It is a situation to monitor closely by fantasy managers, as whoever wins the job will be fantasy-relevant, potentially in a big way. Whatever happens, expect to see Mayer in Boston sometime this season for his big league debut.

Marcelo Mayer To Play On Friday
3 weeks agoBoston Red Sox shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer (illness) has recovered from a stomach illness this week and plans to play in a Grapefruit League game on Friday against the Miami Marlins, according to manager Alex Cora. Mayer is feeling better and will be back in action in spring training this weekend. Per MLB Pipeline, the 22-year-old is the team's No. 3 prospect, behind only outfielder Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell. He's the future at the shortstop position in Boston, but it's still fully expected that the begins the 2025 regular season at Triple-A Worcester for some more development. Hip and back injuries prevented Mayer from playing at all at Worcester last year after he was promoted from Double-A. The 6-foot-3, 188-pounder hasn't played more than 91 games in a single season in the minors due to injuries, so his durability at the next level is a major question mark.

Marcelo Mayer Has Stomach Bug
3 weeks agoBoston Red Sox shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer (illness) is battling the stomach bug. His teammate Roman Anthony had it as well. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status but should expect him to be sidelined for a few days. The 22-year-old is considered one of the top prospects in Boston and the entire sport. Last season, Mayer logged 77 games with Double-A. Across this stint, Mayer posted a .307/.370/.480 slash line with 28 doubles and eight home runs. He swiped 13 bags and held a 30:66 BB:K ratio. This was a nice improvement compared to the .189/.254/.355 line he held across his first taste of Double-A during the 2023 season. He was promoted to Triple-A but could not make an appearance due to a back injury. Mayer will likely open the 2025 season at Triple-A and should push for a 2025 MLB debut.

Marcelo Mayer Homers, Collects Three RBI In Three-Hit Day
4 weeks agoBoston Red Sox shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer went 3-for-3 with three RBI in Thursday's 6-5 Grapefruit League win over the Tigers, which included a single, a triple, and his first home run of the spring season. The 22-year-old is now 5-for-11 (.455) in the spring, and although he's a long shot to make the team out of camp, the Red Sox have to be thrilled to see him out there fully healthy after finishing last season on the IL with a lumbar strain. The 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter is the third-ranked Red Sox prospect and No. 12 overall in MLB. The former first-round draft pick spent all of 2024 at Double-A, slashing .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs and 13 steals in 335 PA. He's expected to begin the season at Triple-A, but with oft-injured Trevor Story manning short for the BoSox, Mayer is a nice insurance policy who should make his major league debut in 2025, however, he shouldn't be drafted in most standard-sized fantasy leagues.
