Bailey Zappe The Clear Backup In New England
1 year agoWith New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones looking much more comfortable running the offense this offseason after last year's disappointment, second-year backup Bailey Zappe was clearly in the backup role during offseason practices. He rarely worked with the starting offensive line. However, Zappe may have the upper hand on Jones with his ability to hit receivers with anticipation and a tad more zip on throws toward the sideline. But Jones has the support of his teammates as the starting QB, and Zappe's physical tools aren't enough of an upgrade to truly push Jones for the starting gig. The former fourth-rounder made two starts last year with Jones injured and completed 65 of his 92 pass attempts for 781 yards, five TDs and four interceptions in four total appearances.
