2 years agoChicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal will start on the pine for Saturday's contest against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. It appears to just be a normal day of rest for Madrigal, who has gone 5-for-15 with two RBI in his last five games. The 26-year-old hasn't really panned out in the big leagues after the Chicago White Sox took him fourth overall in the 2018 draft out of Oregon State. He's spent some time in the minors this year and has played in just 41 games for the Cubbies, hitting a mediocre .248 (28-for-113) with three doubles, a triple, no home runs, 11 RBI, three steals and 15 runs scored in 125 trips to the plate. Madrigal is not a mixed-league fantasy asset. Miles Mastrobuoni is starting at the hot corner Saturday and is hitting in the nine-hole against Orioles right-hander Kyle Gibson.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoThe New York Mets have placed second baseman Nick Madrigal (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list. This transaction opened a spot on the roster for outfielder Alexander Canario, who the team acquired in a trade from the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Madrigal suffered a fractured shoulder during Sunday's spring training contest. He was initially diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder, but testing revealed further damage. As a result, fantasy managers should expect Madrigal to be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Earlier in the offseason, the infielder signed a one-year contract with the Mets to serve as depth infielder. With Madrigal sidelined, fantasy managers should expect infield prospect Luisangel Acuna to be given significant opportunity during camp to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. During his brief at the majors last season, he held a .308/.325/.641 line across 14 contests.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoThe New York Mets announced on Monday that infielder Nick Madrigal (shoulder) fractured his left shoulder when he dislocated it during Sunday's Grapefruit League game. According to manager Carlos Mendoza, Madrigal will be "out for a long time." The injuries are already mounting for the Mets early in spring training, with starting pitchers Frankie Montas (lat) and Sean Manaea (oblique) also expected to miss Opening Day in late March. Madrigal was an early favorite to win a bench spot in his first season with the Mets, but now he'll start the year on the injured list. His injury will open up opportunities for Luisangel Acuna, Brett Baty, Donovan Walton, Jared Young and Luis De Los Santos to compete for a utility role in spring training. Madrigal, a first-rounder by the White Sox in 2018, didn't really have any fantasy value in mixed leagues to begin with heading into the 2025 season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoNew York Mets second baseman Nick Madrigal (shoulder) sustained a dislocated shoulder during Sunday's spring training contest. Madrigal received the starting nod at shortstop in this contest but was pulled from the game in the opening frame after charging a ground ball. The team is waiting on the MRI results to determine the severity of the injury. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during camp, but the 27-year-old could be in danger of missing the start of the campaign. Earlier in the offseason, the Mets signed Madrigal to a one-year contract worth $1.35 million. When healthy, fantasy managers should expect Madrigal to serve as a depth infielder. While sidelined, prospect Luisangel Acuna could see increased opportunities at second base and shortstop.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

2 months agoThe New York Mets will take a look at infielder Nick Madrigal at shortstop, among other positions, in spring training, according to the New York Post's Mike Puma. Madrigal has never played shortstop in the big leagues, but the Mets don't have a real backup option to Francisco Lindor at the position to start the year besides prospect Luisangel Acuna. The 27-year-old Madrigal was the fourth overall pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2018 out of Oregon State, but he hasn't lived up to his draft stock at all and has a career .274/.323/.344 slash line with a .667 OPS, four home runs, 77 RBI, 17 stolen bases and 96 runs scored in five seasons with the White Sox and Chicago Cubs. Injuries have been a big culprit, as Madrigal has yet to play 100 games in a season. He has good speed and makes a lot of contact, but his lack of power hurts his fantasy appeal. At this point, he's nothing more than a bench player.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
