Jo Adell is a fantasy baseball waiver wire pickup for hitters heading into Week 12 (2023). Target Jo Adell as a free-agent outfielder on the waiver wire.
BALLER MOVE: Add in deep/AL only leagues
ROSTERED IN: 3% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Outfielder Jo Adell gets another crack at big-league action as the Los Angeles Angels have promoted their former top prospect who will be in the starting lineup Thursday night against the Chicago Cubs.
There have been flashes, but Adell has simply struggled at the big-league level. He brings with him a .215 batting average along with 15 home runs, six stolen bases, and a .616 OPS through his first 557 plate appearances at the MLB level. The power has been palatable, but a 4.7% BB% alongside a bloated 34.8% K% is not going to cut it at the big-league level.
Here's a player that hasn't had much problem with Triple-A pitching every season since 2021. He has hit for massive power at the minors' highest level with 54 home runs over his last 168 Triple-A contests. However, the strikeout issues aren't limited to the big leagues as he's punched out in at least 29.2% of his plate appearances in last three Triple-A campaigns, including this one.
Clearly, power is not an issue, at least in the minors. Adell has beat the ball into the ground at a 42.2% clip in his MLB career while his 2023 mark at Triple-A stands at just 30.9%. He's been able to lift the ball into the air at a far superior clip in the minors than he has through his first three tastes of big-league action.
On the positive side of things, Adell has been able to generate walks at a far better clip of late. Following a 7.6% BB% in the 2021 campaign at Triple-A, he's been able to post an 11.1% mark in 2022 and a 10.7% clip so far in 2023. Add in his .278 average in the minors and Adell owns a .365 on-base percentage to go along with a gargantuan 18 home runs and 12 doubles across 242 plate appearances, good for a .316 isolated power on the season.
He's a low-risk flier in deep and AL-only leagues but if he's unable to cut down on strikeouts he will be back on the wire sooner than later.
