One and Done Selections - The Memorial Tournament
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Adam Scott
Alternate - Scottie Scheffler
The sweet swingin' Aussie has been a legit "Steady Eddie" on this treacherous Muirfield layout over the years. Scott has made the cut in an eye-opening 13 of his 14 career Memorial starts.
The vet scored a runner-up at Muirfield as recently as 2019, and with his current form, another strong finish is not out of the question in this year's edition. Scott hasn't missed a cut in over a year and has posted top-eight finishes in two of his last three starts while gaining strokes T2G in each of his last four.
Yearly Earnings - $2,870,392
Yearly Cuts Made - 18/19
Josh Bennett - Jon Rahm
Alternate - Collin Morikawa
I am guessing there will be three very heavily picked players in OAD contests this week for very good reason, and I’m taking one of them. I think we’re looking at Rahm, Cantlay, and Xander as the best choices here based just on history here and form. I’ve already used Cantlay and Xander in this contest, so I’m using the last of the 3 names I listed in Rahm. Nobody has played this event better than Rahm in the last three years. Cantlay is close, but we have to remember in 2021 Rahm was running away with a victory for back-to-back before he was pulled from the event. In my mind, that’s 2 wins, a 10th, and a 27th. Wildly good success, especially considering the field at this event is usually very good. We all know what Jon Rahm is good at, I don’t need to dive into any stats there and it really doesn’t matter anyway. Quite obviously a course now that really suits him, so no need to overthink it.

Spencer Aguiar - Hideki Matsuyama
Alternate - Cameron Young
If I have learned anything from my 'Who's Your Daddy?' contest with Stephie Smallls, it is that maybe I am a dude that needs multiple fathers weekly to avoid being hurt.
Part of me wants to go for broke and choose Cameron Young because I do have a weird feeling he is going to win this event, but I'll play it marginally safer because if you make less than 50% of your OAD cuts in this contest, you get fired from the website.
No need to get canned chasing love from all my volatile fathers.

Byron Lindeque - Scottie Scheffler
“Vent session done, let's grab another elite Bentgrass putter who will undoubtedly churn out a dud of a performance on the greens after we put him in our OAD slot.” - Charles Schwab article. Guess what? Justin Rose lead the field on approach, having his best iron performance of the last 3 years, while simultaneously having his worst putting performance over that period, too. Unreal variance there, yet not remotely surprising.
I am tempted to just take a guy who can’t putt, that way a poor putting performance won’t be a surprise. Naturally, by that logic, we should roll out Scottie Scheffler, which is exactly what we are going to do. There is $3.6 million up for grabs and we have saved golf’s very own Michael Jackson to moonwalk his way to the top prize at Jack’s Place. “The Scheffler Shuffle” through impact doesn’t even need to be patented, as there is not another pair of ankles on this earth that can withstand that can of contortion.
On the brink of broken ankles, Scottie is also on the brink of breaking Tiger’s record of 15 consecutive top-15s (I will investigate this to clarify the exact number), but either way, this dude is just straight up balling out right now. He has the 3rd-best strokes gained at Muirfield Village and leads the field in recent form, approach, driving and bogey avoidance. He is also top-5 in par 5 scoring, medium difficulty scoring and birdie rates.
He is a tee-to-green freak show, which is exactly what is needed here. His putting that ranks in the bottom third of the field is a laughable deficiency in his game that almost doesn’t even matter when looking at top-10 finishes. If he could putt as well as Rahm, he would be unstoppable. By now, hopefully enough people have played him already, with those that haven’t hopefully playing Rahm, allowing us to sneak in a dub in Dublin!

Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means options like Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele got rewarded for being better options for our models (which we see with their 17.5% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Wyndham Clark, Adam Svensson and Stephan Jaeger – three golfers that received 5% of the projected pick equity.
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Patrick Cantlay this week as the selection and Corey Conners as the alternate.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
