The Houston Texans have been arguably the worst team in the NFL the past few years. They traded away Deshaun Watson last offseason after the quarterback sat out the 2021 season.
However, the team didn’t add a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft. Instead, they gave Davis Mills another year as the starter. Unfortunately, he didn’t impress the coaching staff or the front office.
Fans spent all offseason wondering if the Texans would draft a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. After months of rumors and speculation, Houston selected C.J. Stroud with their top draft pick.

What Did C.J. Stroud And Davis Mills Accomplish Last Year?
Mills had a decent rookie season, completing 66.8% of his pass attempts for 2,664 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 13 games. However, he regressed last season. The former Stanford quarterback completed only 61% of his pass attempts for 3,118 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Furthermore, the second-year quarterback led the NFL in interceptions despite missing two games.
Meanwhile, Stroud had an excellent year at Ohio State. The former Buckeye completed 71.9% of his pass attempts for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns in 2021. He had several NFL-caliber wide receivers on the team, including Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Marvin Harrison Jr.
However, the quarterback’s numbers slightly regressed last year. Wilson and Olave were in the NFL, while Smith-Njigba struggled with injuries. Despite the change in weapons, Stroud completed 66.3% of his pass attempts for 3,688 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2022.
Is C.J. Stroud Or Davis Mills The Texans Starting Quarterback?
While Houston used the No. 2 overall pick on Stroud, the Texans aren’t immediately handing him the starting job right away. Mills was the first quarterback up in drills today, while the rookie was second.
The former Buckeye will be the Week 1 starting quarterback. However, the Texans have no reason to keep the rookie off the field this season. Meanwhile, the veteran Case Keenum will be the No. 2 quarterback. Yet, the team reportedly is not interested in trading away Mills.
However, fans shouldn’t expect the former Stanford quarterback on the roster come Week 1. Houston will likely only get a late Day 3 pick for the third-year quarterback. Yet, the team is better off with Mills off the roster and the draft pick than the other way around.
