One and Done Selections - The Charles Schwab Challenge
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Collin Morikawa
Alternate - Justin Rose
Well…I picked the wrong LIV horse last week, as my OAD choice Dustin Johnson fizzled after a strong start, while my alternate choice, Brooks Koepka, went on to win the PGA Championship for his fifth major title. It pretty much sums up my entire 2023 OAD season.
Firmly out of the race, I might as well swing for the fences from here on out. As a result I’ll fire away with Collin Morikawa, a player that, like me in this contest, has largely disappointed this year. Morikawa lost in a playoff in this event in the first tournament back from the COVID break of 2020 and this Colonial layout seems made for his accuracy off the tee and laser-precise iron play. Let’s hope that Collin and me can get a win this week.
Yearly Earnings - $2,820,288
Yearly Cuts Made - 17/18
Josh Bennett - Justin Rose
Alternate - Brian Harman
If you have Jordan Spieth still available in a contest like this, it feels like there’s no better time than now to use him. I don’t however, so I’m going to what is close to, if not the next best course history/form player in the field. I’m going to go ahead and throw out Rose’s 2022 MC, given how poor of a golfer he was for a while back then. If you take that out; 4 made cuts, a win, a third, and another top 20 at this event is very intriguing for someone coming off a great performance at the PGA Championship and has been rattling off top 25 finishes for a bunch of events in a row. Justin Rose in form can take down an event like this, and would be cool to see him add a legit victory this year in addition to his win at the carnival hurricane event at Pebble. Seems to be the year of career resurgences, hopefully we will see Rose continue that trend this week.

Spencer Aguiar - Jordan Spieth
Alternate - Russell Henley
False alarm last week at the PGA Championship. It appears as if we aren't sooooo back.
The disaster of 2023 in this contest has remained steady since the first event of the season, and it has presented this shocking output that is not only riddled with missed cut finishes but also timely errors that seem to occur only during the more significant payouts of the year. Not a good strategy to miss the cut every week when the purses are increased.
Down millions of dollars and needing a swing for the fence, I will take a golfer in Jordan Spieth, who enters the week with one wrist working and the other hurt. That may not be the safest strategy for those holding the lead in their leagues, but there is something to be said about Spieth in Texas that I would like to take advantage of while I still can.
Spieth's ball striking looked impressive at the PGA for a golfer that was hurt entering the event, and the hope remains that the home state air of Texas contributes to the feel-good nature of the American.

Byron Lindeque - Justin Rose
If the PGA Championship was won off of SG OTT Patrick Cantlay would have finished 2nd, barely, losing to Bryson by +0.12 total strokes over 4 rounds. Unfortunately, thats not how it works, but after gaining excessively OTT you would think the best Bentgrass putter in the field would have had a realistic shot at winning this thing, but that was not to be, as Patty Ice froze up on the greens not even cracking the top 40 in SG Putting, barely gaining strokes on his favorite surface on route to T9 that could have been much better.
Vent session done, let's grab another elite Bentgrass putter who will undoubtedly churn out a dud of a performance on the greens after we put him in our OAD slot.
Step right up, Justin Rose, and show us whatcha got! At 28-1 on the betting board we get a relatively contrarian selection as our play this week. Let’s start with his best stats and work our way down the Rose stem that seemingly lacks the necessary thorns to deter OAD predators like yours truly. Justin requires very little adjustin to the course he will be playing this week, as he is a past winner (2018) who also has a T3 and a top-20 in his last 5 starts here.
His iron play (7th) over the last 24 rounds is peaking justin time to play the 7,200 yard chess board that is Colonial CC. The reason for the play on words is because he likes to play on Bentgrass greens, gaining the 5th most strokes on this surface over the last 50 rounds. Rose has the accuracy needed to position his tee shots in the correct parts of the fairway.
The Brit will look to tame the Texans in their home state, taking their Plaid Jackets and restored 1973 Ford Broncos and pimping that ride with tea bags and English elegance of epic proportions, claiming his 2nd Texas-sized trophy at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Justin Rose got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 15% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Tom Hoge and Eric Cole – two golfers that received 2.5% of the projected pick equity.
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Jordan Spieth this week as the selection and Max Homa as the alternate.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
