Vince Velasquez To Throw Live Batting Practice Next Week
2 years agoPittsburgh Pirates right-hander Vince Velasquez (elbow) will throw live batting practice early next week, and the team is optimistic he'll miss the minimum amount of time on the injured list, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Velasquez was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 5 with right-elbow inflammation, but he could return to the team's starting rotation around May 20. The 30-year-old veteran has been solid through his first seven starts for the Bucs in 2023, posting a 3.06 ERA (4.06 FIP), 1.16 WHIP, 13 walks and 34 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings pitched. There isn't a ton of upside with Velasquez, but he's at least worth streaming in deeper leagues if he continues to pitch well upon his return from the injured list.
