Who among Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, and Rashee Rice will be the No. 1 wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs? Who among them offers the best upside in 2023 fantasy football?

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a Super Bowl victory, but the wide receiver position can be considered one of its weaknesses after the departure of Tyreek Hill after the 2021 season and JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason.

Travis Kelce is the clear target hog for Patrick Mahomes, but there are no other established NFL wideouts on the roster heading into 2023. Mahomes can seemingly thrive regardless, but as fantasy football managers, we need to figure out which young Chiefs' wideout could be No. 2 in the target pecking order next season.

The Case for Kadarius Toney

According to ESPN's Adam Teicher, the Chiefs believe wide receiver Kadarius Toney is the favorite to be the team's No. 1 option on the depth chart. The 24-year-old began his career with the Giants. However, after things didn't work out in New York, Kansas City landed him in a trade in October. In seven regular-season games with the Chiefs, he had 14 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. He also had another score on a run.

That said, Toney certainly has the skills necessary to be a potent wideout, even if he hasn't consistently had the stats to support the notion.

The Case for Skyy Moore

Moore caught 171 passes for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns in 30 games at Western Michigan and became a second-round pick by Kansas City in the 2022 NFL Draft. He wasn't productive as a rookie, catching just 22 of his 33 targets for 250 yards and no touchdowns during the regular season, but he did catch one pass for a touchdown in Super Bowl 57.

Ultimately, there seemed to be a learning curve for the young wideout, but he has the skill set to be a PPR machine in fantasy football. With Smith-Schuster headed to New England, he has a chance to take that role as a secondary intermediate target behind Travis Kelce. He should have a leg up on Rice since he's been in the offensive system one year longer.

The Case for Rashee Rice

Rice was a second-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft after a breakout season at Southern Methodist University. The 23-year-old caught 96 passes for 1,355 yards and 10 touchdowns in his final collegiate season. He ran a 4.51 40 yard-dash at 204 pounds and has impressive vertical and broad jumps.

He might be the most complete wideout on the Kansas City roster with size and route-running savvy, but rookies take time to develop, especially in a complicated Andy Reid offense. That said, it helps that he has real YAC skills and forces plenty of missed tackles.

Which Chiefs' Wide Receiver Should I Draft?

Again, Travis Kelce might as well be labeled the team's "WR1", but ultimately, this is a tough situation to navigate. We can't simply overreact to the Chiefs reportedly viewing Toney as the WR1. He hasn't been able to stay on the field through his first two NFL seasons, and he's still a raw wide receiver with limited experience at the position. He played just one season at Florida as a full-time wide receiver and has just 55 catches on his NFL game log.

His average draft position is the WR38 spot, while Moore (WR56) and Rice (WR61) are much cheaper to acquire in Best Ball drafts. Given that they are all unproven and are tough to project, taking the discount on the cheaper Kansas City receivers is likely the smart move.
