BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 25% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: The Twins lost Kenta Maeda to a triceps strain and turned to Bailey Ober to fill their rotation spot. The team has also lost Tyler Mahle to injury, so it looks like Ober is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Ober has filled in nicely for the ball club, posting back-to-back starts of 5.2 innings pitched, allowing just one earned run in each.
As for his schedule ahead, he’s lined up to face the Guardians, Padres, and Dodgers. Three tough matchups compared to the Nationals and Royals in the previously mentioned starts. He generally does not go deep into games, being limited to under 90 pitches through two starts. He’s not a must-add but is a solid arm in the back end of your fantasy baseball starting rotation.
Ober’s pitch arsenal relies heavily on his four-seam fastball with a mix of his slider and changeup. He’s also induced more weak contact than in years past while throwing his slider more often to right-handed batters. His hard-hit rate ranks in the 91st percentile through two starts, per Statcast.
Ober will need to improve his secondary pitches in these next couple of starts in order to remain relevant in fantasy leagues. His low 90s fastball has the potential to get crushed by well-rounded hitting teams in his upcoming schedule if his secondary pitches aren't playing up.
His strikeout upside is lacking as he’s managed 10:5 K:BB so far against plus matchups. His ERA sits at 1.59 ERA as of now but the Guardians make it difficult on pitchers with their contact-heavy approach.
