Former Alabama tight end Cameron Latu was projected to be a sixth-round pick in most mock drafts leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft. That didn't stop the San Francisco 49ers from selecting him in the third round (101st overall), meaning he now carries at least some fantasy football intrigue.
The 23-year-old tight end lands in one of the best offenses in the NFL. He'll start his career behind one of the greatest tight ends in football, so it'll be interesting to see how he develops at the next level.
Is Latu a good fit for the 49ers and what can we expect from him as a rookie in fantasy football? Let's dive in.

What Did Cameron Latu Accomplish At Alabama?
Latu joined the Crimson Tide in 2018, but he served as a special teams player and linebacker until switching to tight end. Still, he played sparingly until his redshirt junior year, when he became the primary pass-catching tight end for Bryce Young.
In 2021, Latu caught 26 passes for 410 yards and eight touchdowns. He followed that campaign up with a 30-catch, 377-yard, four-touchdown season as a fifth-year senior.
Despite having lackluster production and posting mediocre athletics testing numbers, he did enough to be a Day 2 pick during the 2023 NFL Draft.
Is Cameron Latu A Good Fit For The 49ers?
49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan selected Latu for a reason and surely plan to utilize him in some way. Given his weak athletic profile and unimpressive late-career production, the selection felt like a reach. That said, it would be tough for any tight end to produce behind George Kittle. If he stays healthy, Latu has almost zero fantasy value as a rookie.
That said, the 49ers have an out in Kittle's deal after the 2023 season. It'd be surprising if they cut him unless he falls off mightily in production or struggles to stay on the field. Even then, Latu doesn't project as a volume tight end with an upside at the next level. He's nothing more than a deep tight end-premium league dart throw in 2023 rookie dynasty drafts.
