One and Done Selections - The Wells Fargo Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Viktor Hovland
Alternate - Rory McIlroy
Vik eventually has to win one of these things, right? While the happy-go-lucky Norwegian has some wins on his professional resume, he's yet to truly break through in a big-time event. However, he's been routinely knocking on the door in some of golf's biggest tournaments, including the 2022 Open Championship and this year's Masters.
With tee-to-green ability that falls into the elite category, Hovland’s sharp ball striking is a natural fit for this week’s brutish Quail Hollow layout. A T3 in the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship - powered by a weekend over which he shot 68-67 - confirms as much.
Yearly Earnings - $2,674,847
Yearly Cuts Made - 14/15
Josh Bennett - Jason Day
Alternate - Patrick Cantlay
I don’t do this often, but this pick is based totally off of feel to me. It *feels like* Day is on one of those streaks where someone just kind of hangs around the top of the leaderboards for a while and then all of a sudden finally wins one. He’s been playing really good on all kinds of different courses, now on a course he’s won at before with some other solid finishes, I can see this being the place where he gets back into the winners circle. Although the field is strong, he’s hung around just fine with the stronger fields already this year so I anticipate he will do the same again this weekend. Plus, it will be really fun for me to have picked Spencer’s guy on the week that he wins, this might be the part I look forward to most if he does end up in contention on Sunday.

Spencer Aguiar - Sam Burns
Alternate - Rickie Fowler (My 2nd Pick In Two-Pick Contests)
We finally did something right in this contest last week by hitting Tony Finau for $1,386,000 to claw into the $3,000,000 zone for the season. Unfortunately, it is still a six-million-dollar deficit that we need to overcome after Mia's blistering start to the season, which begs the question: "Who can really beat an algorithm?"
I will try my best to keep the momentum going and do the impossible by grabbing a golfer in Sam Burns, who is hitting his stride after winning the Match Play in March.
Sure, Burns' weighted proximity leaves something to be desired when we look at his ability from outside of 150 yards, but he is a plus-driver for distance off the tee and also grades as the top Bermuda player in this field over his past 50 rounds.
That profile catapults his expected tee-to-green output in my model for the week and makes him a name that should be able to be selected as an under the radar choice.
Yearly Earnings - $3,398,729
Yearly Cuts Made - 10/15
Byron Lindeque - Matthew Fitzpatrick
Turns out when I am on vacation I don’t even submit my own personal OAD for the week, making me President of the Ketchup Kings if I was not already. In that vane we are going to bite the snake that bit us last time out and put Matt Fitzpatrick in our OAD slot for the week. It was a toss up between him and Sungjae with brace face ultimately winning the tie breaker based off his recently discovered upside.
With a win at the RBC Heritage and a T10 at the Masters dare we go back to grinning golfer who seems to be riding some seriously good vibes after overcoming his neck injury earlier in the year. The ball striking numbers for Fitz when not playing with his brothers balls at the Zurich, are really appealing and when grading golfers by course difficulty, Fitzmagic waves his wand better than anybody in the field on tough courses.
His ability to avoid bogeys is the third best in the field and he dominates Par 5s too! His added length off the tee will suit the bomber narrative and his touch around the greens is yet another key component of his game that sits inside the top 10 in the field. You know what they say, “If the shoe Fitz!” play him!
Yearly Earnings - $6,393,355
Yearly Cuts Made - 13/15
Andrew Putters - Cameron Young
Alternate - Max Homa
As I am looking at Quail Hollow Country Club, there are a couple stats that stick out. The first is Distance off the tee, and second is players that hit their long irons well have a huge advantage. Cam Young fits right into this filter. Cam absolutely is a bomber off the tee, and he hits it straight. He also a top 5 long iron player on tour this year. With Rahm and Scheffler sitting this week out, Cam Young makes a lot of sense.
Yearly Earnings - $3,083,719
Yearly Cuts Made - 12/15
Mia The Model - Keegan Bradley
Alternate - Patrick Cantlay
Byron T20
TeeOff T20
Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Rory McIlroy got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 15% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Emiliano Grillo – a golfer that received 5% of the projected pick equity.
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Keegan Bradley this week as the selection and Patrick Cantlay as the alternate.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
***Bradley was drawn twice.
