LIV Golf Betting Picks - 2023 Adelaide

The LIV Golf League will make its debut in Australia this week for one of the most highly anticipated events of the season. The LIV Golf League will hold this week’s event at The Grange Golf Club, in Australia. The LIV Adelaide event was allotted 60,000 tickets for this week and has been sold out since mid-February. Between the raucous Australian crowd and the buzz surrounding LIV’s performance at the Masters, I expect a big week in viewership and attention.

The Grange Golf Club will play as a 6946-yard par-72. The Grange has two courses (East and West) and both will be used as a composite layout for LIV Adelaide. According to LIV Golf’s Mike McCarthy, holes 9-10 and 12-18 of the East Course will provide holes 1-9 of the composite course. The back nine of the West Course will be used for holes 10-18 this week. LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman was involved in the redesign for the East Course in 2012 and Mike Clayton was responsible for the redesign of the West Course.

The Grange Golf Club isn’t overly long and isn’t a course that players will overpower. The tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkering throughout will make this very much about accuracy off the tee. I believe the event will be very scorable and there will be plenty of birdie opportunities for those who find fairways and greens in regulation.

The Grange will require accuracy over power off the tee. That said, the length of the course is going to allow players to club down a lot on tee shots, therefore relying on driving accuracy statistics may not tell the full story. I will be focusing on players who have proven to play well on shorter, positional courses. Fairways and greens in regulation will be the path to success this week in Australia.

LIV Golf Betting Strategy & Selections - Adelaide

I am coming off a +4000 Brooks Koepka winner at LIV Orlando and will look to stay hot this week with my selections. I will look for a combination of guys who have good course fit and players who have a proven track record in Australia.

Will there be a Masters hangover? Brooks Koepka looked like the Brooks of old in his win at LIV Orlando and followed it up with a 54-hole lead at the Masters. Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed also had great weekend performances at the Masters. Will these players carry momentum over to the LIV Adelaide event or will the weekend at Augusta followed by a flight across the world to Australia leave them a little out of gas?

I tend to believe that these guys will be a little tired. They played back to back weeks in Orlando and Augusta, contending over the weekend at a major championship. We heard several PGA Tour players this week speak of being worn out. Jordan Spieth spoke of mental health and fatigue from scheduling and Rory McIlroy was a no show at the RBC Heritage. While LIV did have a week off this past week, a flight across the world to Australia and dealing with a major time zone change isn’t exactly the easiest way to have these players feeling fresh.

Abraham Ancer +2200

Aussie Abe! During his appearance on the Golf Subpar podcast, Ancer noted that Australian fans were calling him “Aussie Abe” during the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne. The 32-year-old went 3-1-1 at the Presidents Cup and was tied as the top International points scorer at the event. He also won the Australian Open in 2018.

On top of his proven track record in Australia, the style of course lends itself to Ancer’s profile. He made a killing on the PGA Tour on shorter positional courses. He was known to have success on Pete Dye courses, which tend to require putting yourself in position off the tee and hitting greens in regulation.

While Abe hasn’t had a great year of results in LIV events, he is coming off a T39 finish at the Masters. After starting +3 through seven holes, he really had to grind to just make the weekend. I don’t think Ancer is thrilled by the result, but there were some positives to take away from the performance. After winning the Saudi International in January, I proclaimed it would be a big year for Ancer and I still believe it.

Thomas Pieters +4000

He hasn’t made a huge splash since joining LIV Golf but this number seems far too high. I believe Thomas Pieters should be going off around +2500, so the +4000 is a must bet. The Belgian Bomber finished T48 at Augusta and finished Sunday without the “bomber” title. After hooking a drive on the 10^th hole it was reported that Pieters threw his driver into a trash can and hit 3-wood for the rest of the day. It’s worth noting he hit all six of the remaining fairways with his 3-wood.

This may actually not be the worst sign for a course I spoke about players being able to club down on. If Pieters can get away with hitting less than driver, I don’t mind him playing with a more accurate approach this week. He was one of the top players on The DP World Tour before making the move to LIV and is more than capable of going low enough to win this event.

His 17^th place finish in Orlando could be largely attributed to driving accuracy. He finished 47 of 48 players in the field in fairways hit. This week with a different approach off the tee I think we could see a lot more birdie looks for Pieters. He finished T2 in the field in putting in Orlando so if he can start hitting more greens in regulation, I believe we can see him contend over the weekend.

Matt Jones +7000

The 42-year-old Australian is coming off a putrid 47^th place finish at LIV Orlando. It should be noted that in his prior start in Tucson, he finished T6. It’s not all bad recently from Jones but I didn’t arrive on this pick because of form.

Jones has an incredible track record in Australia. He is a two time winner of the Australian Open and has a ton of other solid finishes at the event. I believe we could see a potential home cooking for Jones. The veteran is a four-time winner across the world. We have already seen some unlikely veterans pull out LIV wins such as Howell, Schwartzel, Grace and Stenson. Perhaps Jones can add to the list.
