Waiver Wire Pickups for Shallow Leagues

Yandy Diaz, 1B/3B, Tampa Bay Rays (70% rostered)

Although the Rays' torrid 13-0 start was finally quelled by the Toronto Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay lineup is still in great shape. Diaz, their first baseman, has been a bright spot. In 13 games thus far, the 31-year-old has slugged .500 with four home runs, alongside a .845 OPS and five extra-base hits.

Upon looking at his Baseball Savant page, there is a sea of red. So, it's fair to assume that Diaz's breakout is sustainable throughout the remainder of the 2023 season. He's hitting the ball hard, connecting on barrels, and striking out at a low rate. Diaz is the real deal, and he'd be a solid addition to any fantasy lineup.

Joey Meneses, 1B/OF, Washington Nationals (64% rostered)

The 30-year-old Meneses did not make his Major League debut until Aug. 2022, but has made the most of it in the 70 games that followed. Meneses represented Team Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and quickly became a tournament hero—slashing .370/.370/.593 with a pair of home runs and six RBI.

The first baseman has yet to carry his Classic success over to the regular season, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. In fact, Meneses showed signs of life during Saturday's contest with the Cleveland Guardians, going 2-for-4 with two singles, a run scored, and an RBI. The 4-11 Nationals hope this means the infielder is beginning to heat up.

Waiver Wire Pickups for Deeper Leagues

Franchy Cordero, 1B/OF, New York Yankees (36% rostered)

Cordero, surprisingly released by the Baltimore Orioles following a solid spring, was signed as a free agent by the Yankees on March 30. Since joining New York, Cordero has hit four long balls and drove in 11 runs while posting a .846 OPS in 10 games.

Three of his four home runs had an exit velocity of over 100 mph, each being driven to right field. Additionally, the 28-year-old ranks in the 97th percentile in Max Exit Velocity and 89th in Barrel %. The Dominican power bat can add some pop to any fantasy lineup.

Garrett Cooper, 1B/3B, Miami Marlins (20% rostered)

Cooper's .957 OPS ranks second on the Marlins behind Luis Arraez's 1.268. In 13 games this season, the 32-year-old Cooper has logged 17 hits, including five for extra bases and nine RBI. Overall, the 2022 All-Star is slashing .340/.377/.580 across 53 plate appearances.

Cooper has already had two three-hit games during the 2023 campaign, one coming as recently as April 14 during the Marlins' current series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Along with Arraez and Jorge Soler, Cooper has helped Miami to an 8-7 record.
