Spencer Turnbull Toes Rubber Versus Red Sox Thursday
2 years agoDetroit Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull will take the ball Thursday for the Tigers' home opener versus the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander made his first regular-season start since May of 2021 last week against the Rays but was rocked for seven runs on eight hits and three walks across just 2 1/3 innings of work. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch in the outing. Turnbull's 2021 Tommy John surgery came just weeks after he threw a no-hitter in Seattle while he pitched to a stout 2.88 ERA in nine starts before undergoing the knife. He also worked to a 3.97 ERA in the shortened 2020 season but his elbow failed him when he was emerging as a front-end big-league starter. The 30-year-old has allowed two earned runs in eight innings across two starts in his career against the Red Sox.
