The Chicago Bears had a disappointing 2022 season. They started the year with a 2-1 record, including a Week 1 win over the San Francisco 49ers. However, things went downhill from there.
Chicago lost three straight before an impressive 33-14 win over the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football in Week 7. Unfortunately, it was the team’s last win of the season. The Bears lost 10 straight contests to end the year with a 3-14 record.
However, Chicago’s awful season earned them the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Despite four first-round quarterback prospects this year, the Bears made a blockbuster trade earlier today.

What Draft Compensation Did The Bears Receive From The Panthers For The No. 1 Overall Pick?
While most expected the Houston Texans or Indianapolis Colts to trade for the No. 1 overall pick, the Carolina Panthers made a massive deal for the top draft selection this year.
Chicago will receive the ninth and 61st overall picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, a 2024 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and star wide receiver DJ Moore for the No. 1 overall pick.
Getting Moore was a requirement for the Bears. Carolina offered Chicago a 2025 first-round pick instead of the star receiver. The Bears declined the offer, as they were determined to give Justin Fields an elite weapon this offseason.
What Are The Bears Biggest Needs Post-Trade?
After acquiring the former Maryland star in their deal with the Panthers, many might think the Bears no longer need help at wide receiver. The team also acquired Chase Claypool at last year’s trade deadline for a 2023 second-round pick (32nd overall). Furthermore, Darnell Mooney is a talented wide receiver.
The trio of Moore, Mooney, and Claypool is impressive on paper. However, Mooney and Claypool are entering the final year of their rookie contracts. With Moore on a massive second contract, Chicago likely won’t keep Mooney and Claypool past this upcoming season. Furthermore, the team could let both leave in free agency next offseason.
Therefore, fans shouldn’t rule out a wide receiver with the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft. One potential target is Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The former Ohio State receiver was unstoppable in 2021 before injuries derailed his 2022 season.
More importantly, Smith-Njigba and Fields were on the same Ohio State roster in 2020. The wide receiver talked about how he would love to play with Fields in Chicago.
