Will Carson Wentz Retire in the 2023 Offseason?

Carson Wentz - Fantasy Football Rankings, Waiver Wire Pickups, Draft Sleepers

Will Carson Wentz Retire in the 2023 Offseason? How did Wentz play in 2022? Read the 2023 NFL offseason outlook.

Former Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz is officially a free agent after being released by Washington, and there is some speculation that he could retire this offseason.

The Colts and Commanders moved on from him after just one season, so it's natural to question his future in the NFL.

How did Wentz perform in 2022 and will he retire this offseason? Let's dive in.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Carson Wentz 2022 Season Review

In seven starts (eight games played) Wentz completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Wentz missed several games due to a finger injury and was benched for Taylor Heincke when he ultimately did return to full health. Wentz went 2-5 in games he started, while the Commanders went 6-3-1 in games he did not play in.

Ultimately, it was just more of the same from Wentz. He was selected to the All-Pro team in 2017 before suffering a major knee injury, but he hasn't returned to that elite level in the years since.

While Wentz could opt to be a backup on a new team, retirement after several injuries and dissipating seasons wouldn't be all that surprising.

Will Carson Wentz Retire this Offseason?

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz doesn't intend on calling it quits anytime soon. The Commanders recently released the veteran signal-caller, saving the team just over $26 million against the salary cap.

Wentz is coming off one of arguably the worst year of his career, but another team will likely be interested in picking up the 26-year-old this offseason, especially since he's open to any role. However, his days as a productive quarterback are probably over, so he won't see much interest from fantasy managers.

That said, he could serve as a bridge quarterback in a place like Arizona while they wait on Kyler Murray to heal from his torn ACL, so he is worth monitoring this offseason and free agency begins.
